Desktop Icons Aren't Working :(

I have W7 Home Premium and my desktop icons aren't working. I have to reboot to get them to work :( I use Microsoft Essentials for Virus Protection not Norton.

Any assistance in solving this problem appreciated thanks Dorothy

Did you just install Windows 7? Or, are these icons that have not been used for quite sometime? Try running this Fix It tool from Microsoft. It is used to fix problems with desktop icons, shortcuts, and Windows Update Errors - Common system maintenance tasks. Let us know what happens.

Windows 7 came on my computer i tried running "Common system maintenance tasks" as suggested and they said nothing needed to be fixed :( I still have issues as described :"windows 7 Shortcuts on the desktop don't work or are broken"

Emh... have you been changing your drive letters? that might be the reason? or have you been using 3rd party programs that is fiddling with your desktop composition?

I LOVE customizing my pc in every possible way... :)
When you say the shortcuts are broken, what do you mean? Do the icon pictures not appear? Nothing happens when you click on the shortcuts? If this happened recently, you can use a system restore point to go back to before the problem happened.

Hi ;)

Maybe You just disabled the "show desktop icons", to re-enable it:

Clic right on the desktop > View > Show Desktop Icons :)

If she is having the same issue I am, you can see the icons just fine, but after I use the computer for an hour or so, I lose the ability to use the icons, its as if they are just part of the walpaper, they don't highlight when I hover on them, and they don' bring up my page when I double click.

I am having same issue as you and 6 weeks later no solution. When I go to the task bar on the bottom I can see the program trying to open. I am at wits end over this. The only way I get online is by clicking onn IE logo at bottom of screen.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Dorothy
