I unchecked anlign to grid which solved the problem for, auto arrange is also unchecked
    Does not always work.

I have Auto arrange and Align to grid disabled, yet Align to grid is always re-selected after each restart.

Which results in the damn icons always moving...

Not sure mate. It's worth a try for others though.

I use Ultramon 3.0.9 which ostensibly has a save/restore icon function, but it's not particularly effective in restoring what I consider the 'saved' position.

I've seen many icon position saving software (like Ultramon), Desktop restore is simply the best.

Not all the way down toward the taskbar with medium size.

make sure auto arrange is not checked. Align to grid can be either way it doesn't matter. Move the icons where you want them and then CLICK REFRESH!! I'm not yelling. I just want the answer to stand out.

I have exactly the same problem. Only started happening recently and now it happens every time I reboot my machine. Just a point of interest, if you have your desktop in slideshow mode you ARE using a Theme as you have to have a Theme active to allow the slideshow to work. I'm guessing, like me, you just have a blank Theme selected that you've then tailored to your own flavour so you don't end up with some bland MS Theme?

An odd symptom of this I've come across today is that I send a lot of photos to friends using my home PC and tend to drop them on my desktop from my camera, before sending and either filing or deleting, however with the batch I had this morning it kept saying files with the same filename were on my desktop (camera starts at the last stored filename +1) which wasn't the case, I had nothing on my desktop with the filename on it, so wondering if there are hidden files or corruption happening on the desktop that has sparked this all off?
