I'm sorry but microsoft has given the end user the option to turn off IE and use whatever browser they want,
so companies complaining are just whining.

interesting article. I will say that I use FF3.. and I've been loving Firefox for a while now.. I'm currently using their 3.5 Beta on Win7 and it's great. But the new IE8 is pretty solid as well.. I almost just left myself to use it. But in the end I just like FF

Yeah, I just think it's funny that it's still like that. Though, they're not the only ones like that either. It's pretty bad that some sites have links to a IE6 download page when you view them.

What I still don't get is, its Microsoft's Operating System, don't they have the right to have THEIR web-browser tied into it?

I mean OS X comes with Safari and I don't see complaints about that.

The other browsers are worried about their share of the market. Since IE8 is included in the actual OS, they cite unfair advantage.

I think with Microsoft being the owner of windows it gives them the right to put IE in(as much as I don't like it). If these companies don't like the fact it puts a browser in its own os then all I can say is go make your own os then and stop bitching. If people want to use your browser they will, if not then they will look elsewhere for one thats suits their needs.

It is just like owning a nightclub and selling your own crisps in there.

Hi all

It's just these B/S Lawyers again.
Finally realising that even THEY aren't immune from the recession they are just looking around for another way to make money.

If we take the case of IE to "the logical extreme" you'd get for instance

You want to buy a car -- but "unfortunately (shouldn't this word be BANNED -- it's the favourite word of Jobsworths planet wide) we can't supply you with a Steering Wheel, a Gearbox. a set of wheels, or lights as these have to be obtained from other suppliers and installed separately".

I'm quite happy to buy an "All complete OS". If 3rd party products do the job better people will buy them -- such as in the case of a Car above people often buy "Sporty" or Alloy Wheels for example.

SO long as Windows has a decent API that allows people to develop products for it --what's the beef.

I used to like FF myself until fairly recently -- now it seems to be going the way of NERO etc by adding so much Bloat, too many options and zilllions and zillions of complex plugins that you almost need a Ph.D in Computer science to make head or tail of how to make it all work.

A lot of people are quite happy to just Load the OS straight out of the box and use it without having to add a whole slew of complex products.

Integrating say IE with the normal browser makes 100% sense IMO.

If you've ever used KDE on a Linux system you probably will have tried KONQUEROR (the KDE Browser). This browser makes no difference in operation -- whether you are browsing Local files (like Windows explorer) or the Internet like IE8 / FF / Opera etc etc.

It won't be long now before somebody starts complaining that Windows Media Center shouldn't be included in the OS but only available as a 3rd party add in.

Looks like we'll be going back to DOS and have to add in every single application / feature separately.

Looks like a real case of "Yesterday's Technology Tomorrow".

Cheers
jimbo

While I use Firefox 3, I think IE 8 is pretty good but I've been a FF user for quite awhile now and have had no complaints. There are a few things here and there that are in IE that I'd love in FF.

This I agree with, why hasn't anyone started an uproar with Apple about their browser being in OS X? (why did microsoft stop making IE for OS X anyways? lol just a random question).

Why does everyone pick on microsoft? :\

They pick on Microsoft because Microsoft is #1 and they are not. They all tried competing and because Microsoft is so big and evil and all that tripe they couldn't so they decided to pay the government to do it for them.

The resolution for Microsoft(to me) seems they need to make IE8 multi-OS functional. Then if Apple comes at them, they can complain that Safari is the same way, and go even further in saying that Apple is a monopoly, because most of the hardware for Apple computers is proprietary.

Hey, been reading posts on here since I got the RC. You guys are doing a great job :)

Anyway, I find it really stupid that these companies have stooped to such a low level where they are finding any reason to target Microsoft. I've been using Firefox since v1 and still prefer it over IE8, but I'm disgusted that they to, having such a succesfull browser, have joined in.
What do they expect Microsoft to do, not pack IE with Windows??? I'd love to see that. Would be nice to see how anyone downloads their software.

Now about this whole EU issue, why on Earth is MS putting up with their crap. It been a beating already and its only just started. Company's have seen the chance and are going for the low blow.
What baffles me is that the EU hasn't realised these companies are just in there for the money... mind you I guess the EU is getting it too.
When I first hear about this, I though to myself, why the hell don't MS just pull out of the European Market. I'm from the UK so yeah I would be affected, but hey I think most of us, if not all know where to get a copy. The EU would be totally gobsmacked!
I'm sure a couple of days after that gets announced it would get reversed and that we'd probally never hear MS being sued by the EU. LOL

I think thats all I've got to say for the moment.

The EU needed funding to boost the value of the Euro, so it legally pushed M$ in to a corner and bullied them with court room theatrics.

The problem is simple Microsoft almost have a monopoly which is almost always a bad thing for the customer so the laws will always be against them. And you should be happy because without those little push opera and Firefox might have disappeared and we would be stuck with IE6 which was a poor navigator. Competition is essential and sometime needs help

This. While I like Win 7 and I actually prefer IE over the other browsers, the fact is that MS has been designated a monopoly, therefore the rules are different. I don't agree with many of the decisions, as they seem to lack a certain logic, but the fact is that the business world is different for monopolists.

MS has become more open, but only because they were forced to.
