How to associate programs and files not in the list?

How do I associate a file extension with a program when the file extension and program soes not show up in the default list?

I really can not find a way to type in the file extension (which in my case is . nms) with the program that open this file (nomes.exe)

None of the turorials here seems to give an answer?

I really hate when MS makes things so stupid that it tries to "automate" everything, but I refuse to believe that it can be soooo stupid that you can not I can not associate this manually?

If it is not in the list you'll need to add it manually into the registry.

Here explains it better than I can.

when you double click on the file you are trying to open it should give you a list of programs that can open it. Sometimes the list will not show up and windows will ask you if you want to browse the web to file a program or search your local computer.

If you choose to search your computer for the program you can browse to the program that is supposed to open the file type. Once you choose the program, you will get a check box that says always open this file type with this program. After that it will associate that file type with the program that you told it to open with.

I think the problem is that it is not showing in that list however.

    Here's the easy way:
Right click on the file in question. On the drop down menu choose "Open with..." On the next menu Choose "Choose default program" When this dialogue opens at the bottom you will see the Browse button. Click this then in the next window navigate to your Program Files (x86) folder should be C:/Program files (x86)/. Then scroll to the program folder you wish to associate to, double click this folder and when it opens select the Application file in your case I think this will be nomes.exe select this file and check the box that reads "Always use the selected application to open this type of file."
    Click OK
    All Done.

I know its not showing in the list, that is why you have to browse to it c:\program files(x86) , and find the application that it is supposed to open up with.

Lets wait until Trond1954 comes back before we make too many suggestions! We might have already solved the issue!
