Windows 7 ROCKS!!! Eat that APPLE!!

I think the thing with Vista was that it was possible to have a PC that was running Windows XP very well, but under Vista it was a total dog. Of course, flash ahead a few years now and if you have a PC currently running Vista well, it's likely going to run Windows 7 even better. This significant downturn in performance is what turned a lot of people off.

Secondly, driver support wasn't good at the launch of Vista or with any of the betas. However, that same thing really hasn't been true with Windows 7. So, obviously having a bad driver experience with Vista would certainly turn you against the OS pretty fast.

Next, in the original release (prior to SP1), the UAC feature was way over the top in turns of being completely aggravating. And since XP didn't have this feature at all, that really drove some people mad. Now, with Windows 7, (and Vista SP1), they really tuned down the annoying part of UAC while maintaining the functionality part.

Finally, there were quite a few annoying things with Vista (like slow file copies, slow network file copy performance, and various sys admin tools) which just flat out didn't work correctly. So, this got the IT community going off on the release which somewhat turned into a word-of-mouth campaign against the OS.

So, I'll be honest, I've been a certified MS guy for a long time. Vista was the first OS that MS released (aside from ME) that I didn't put onto any of my machines at home. I simply wasn't that excited about it and saw no real incentive over Windows XP to plunk down my money. I use Vista at work (it's on my laptop) and my wife has a laptop at home with Vista now....and it's just fine. But I did pony up the $$'s to buy a copy of Windows 7 (well, I got Vista with a free voucher for Win7)...but I have not loaded Vista onto my machine...I've just used Win 7 RC1. So, I've not sung the praises of Vista...however I have been very impressed with Win7, I've told people about it and I'm genuinely excited for a new MS OS.


As far as "sticking it to Apple". I'm not sure that Windows 7 is really going to have a big impact. The people who buy and use Apple, buy quite a alot into the "trendiness" of it...and the release of Win7 is not going to make PC's appear any more trendy. Also, people who use OSX mainly praise it for it's lack of a centralized registry, viruses, spyware, malware and such. And unfortunately these things aren't going to vanish with Windows 7 either. So, I highly doubt there will be much in terms of a install base % change coming anytime soon. If anything hurt Apple recently, it's the downturn in the economy.

Are you insane? When Vista was launched in 2006, hardly any business and home users could run it on existing systems. Because Microsoft thought hardware would get better but they were wrong. You had to buy new systems which were compatable - even they were below par, leading to a massive lawsuit about the Vista compatability sticker (google it).

My Opinion:

I have a Dell M1530 2.2 Core2duo, 3GB RAM. And guess what? Vista is slow. Slow start-up time about 3 minutes, shutdown is also slow. Memory usage is off the scale from all the crap i-will-never-use services. Opening Control Panel takes 4 seconds!

The above is on Vista 32 bit modified version using vLite. It was even slower before the mod. The registry needs to go in the next version, the amount of junk left behind there is horrible. It's their own fault about the compatability problems on launch, they knew 90% of pc's use windows so get Nvidia/ATI/others on board well ahead of time, they finally done this with W7.

One last thing, currently businesses have computers with the following spec: 2.5ghz, 1gb RAM. Do you really think Vista is going to run decent on these? Answer:NO Will Windows 7: YES

Vista was bad...
I got a new Dell machine when it came out and it was so slow and crashed and blue screen etc etc. Went back to XP.
Same thing at work lots of new Dells and HP's that we got because we needed to test and development. Most machines went back to XP for daily use. We only keep Vista machines from the ones Dell and HP gives us for free for testing and stuff.

Windows 7 wow, so great, we all very happy.

Which apple?

My experience with Vista 32 preinstalled on the T60p was a good one. Even without service packs, it was extremely stable. Absolutely no problems at all.

Cuz vista was built with kernel of windows 7? vista is based on 7... not 7 on vista

I find your remarks a bit strange, as my personal experience is quite the oppposite, I couldn't wait to get rid of XP back in 2006 and replaced all my computers with Vista. To be honest, for me the incentive to go from XP to Vista was a no brainer, much better looking, much more secure, media center being part of the OS, just to name my main reasons. XP back then was outdated, and of course now it is even more so, I can understand that people continue to be running it (change is always intimidating), but from a security perspective, it is unbelievable that people still rely on an OS that suffers from being insecure.

Upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 howerver seems to have much less incentive then XP to Vista, mainly because the number of changes are much lower. Yeah it has some nice Aero enhancements, and it has the services trigger feature which has some performance enhancement (even though they are little when you benchmark them, maybe a placebo effect more then real performance gain), that's about it. Vista to Win 7 is a minor upgrade, XP to vista was a huge upgrade, and of course XP to Win 7 is also huge.

No doubt Windows 7 is better then Vista, also bear in mind that it is based upon Vista, and therefore I find it strange and amazing that Vista haters are liking Windows 7 so much more, as there isn't much difference to warrent a hate changed to love.
