Windows 7: A referral was returned from the server

A referral was returned from the server

I was using Windows 7(64bit) Speech Recognition which was set to run at startup. I have never had any problems with this service until yesterday when, to solve an unrelated problem, I ran MISCONFIG and changed the startup selection to diagnostic mode. After solving the problem I returned to normal startup and discovered that sapisvr.exe was no longer in the startup lineup. All attempts to start it manually elicited the error mesage:
C:\Windows\Speech\Common\Sapisvr.exe
A referral was returned from the server

Does anyone have any idea how I can get this started again?
Thanks

Welcome

Use system restore from a date prior to either problem

Welcome to Seven Forums, if what richc46 doesn't set it straight a Repair Install is in order.

This sounds like a UAC issue. If System Restore cannot fix it, try right clicking C:\Windows\Speech\Common\Sapisvr.exe and choose run as administrator. A Guy

Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned that when I tried System Restore it informed me that there were no Restore points. Which is weird because just before I went into diagnostic mode I'd checked and I had at least 3. Is it possible that using Diagnostic mode somehow wiped it clean?
Trying to start Sapisvr.exe as administrator just gave me the same server referral error mesage. I'll give Repair Install a shot.

I'd try the System Files Checker before going to a repair install:

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

DNS server not responding after I have returned to the factory default
Hi. Recently, I have realized that I cannot open ports anymore. I searched around the web and saw that returning to the factory default configuration can fix the problem. I did that, but now I can't access the internet because of the "DNS server not responding" error. Luckily though, I have saved...

got a returned PC?
hi Everyone, I recently got my Envy17, and have been doing some bloatware removal. When I go into Programs and Features, I see a bunch of programs that have install dates of July 31 2010. I'm wondering, how is this possible if I ordered my PC mid October and it didn't ship until 3rd week of...

Returned To Vista
I installed Windows 7 without any problems but I just don't like it, and without a proper e.mail client it is useless for my purposes. I spent ages trying to configure Windows Live Mail and still couldn't receive any e.mail so I gave up and reinstalled Vista. I just don't see what is so...
