This is not really news...
But I am sure 7 is going to stay as it is. To much interest and use I think to change the name now. To many people would get confused.
Don't forget a much newer blog titled: "Test Updates Coming for the Windows 7 RC" Windows 7 Team Blog - The Windows Blog
That pretty well sums up just how 7 will be introduced just as you see it now. For the version to follow "8" that will likely or could well be given a name rather then number when that starts being introduced.
M$'s original plan was to CodeName the OS (Vienna/Fiji or something like that) but they decided that they would go back to roots. And since this is the 7th major release of their OS they stuck with Windows 7, short and to the point

Whistler was the original for Vista until being renamed to Longhorn. Longhorn server later Vienna Server was renamed to Server 2008. Microsoft Training White Paper: Windows Server 2008: What To Expect 1/4/2008
Blackcomb, longhorn and whistler are just development codenames, not product names as such.
That's all too well known at this late date! It's also far too early to even know what codename will be seen for "8" or best put the next version to follow 7.
Haha. Good thoughts everyone.
I thought they would leave it too, but I wasn't sure.
