I dont know whether you are looking for the OSX style icons or simply shortcuts to your drives.

1) For fixed disks, you can simply create a desktop shortcut. Right click on a blank area on the desktop, then click New-Shortcut. Point the path to the drive. Finish the wizard process, there'll be a desktop shortcut present now. You can customize it by changing the icon, removing the overlay arrow etc. if that interests you.

2) You can also try this app called Desk Drive. It creates automatic drive shortcuts for your desktop, including usb drives. You pop a USB thumb drive or DVD into your computer, this app adds a desktop icon pointing to the drive automatically. Remove the media and the shortcut goes away.

Go Start>Computer and drag to your desktop the drive you want linked.

If you unplug an external and plug in another the link will stick with the drive letter.

I think the OP wants the Linux (Ubuntu) style. When you plug in a External Drive or a Flash Drive in Ubuntu, the icon for that device comes up on the Desktop. You can right click on that and unmount when you are finished.
Even when you insert a CD, the icon comes up on the Desktop.
You can also put the Fixed Drive icons on the Desktop in Linux.

@thungmail,

Other than putting a shortcut to the drive on the Desktop or using Desk Drive (link posted by Bill2), I don't think there is any option to show the drives on the Desktop.

I know this is solved, just right click the drive in computer and select "create shortcut" adds a shortcut to the desktop once there you can name it anything you like by right click, rename.
