Whoops, I forgot to mention it but I did this the first time you suggested it and there were no integrity issues found. I backed up my system and are attempting a clean reinstall now. If nothing else, I'll get a system restore experience. I'll try these searches before disabling libraries, favourites and other registry modifications I made (which were not many).

One thing I did notice though, was that my setup lacked the small 100MB partition that's usually created with win 7.

OK Interested to hear how you get on but I am wondering why you are disabling libraries, I find it one of the best features on 7?

I don't like the libraries as they basically take all the info from my carefully structured file system and treat it as I had dropped every file I own into a single folder. In short, I organise myself by the file content, not by the file type. That's also the reason I prefer having all my files on a separate partition -- there are new folders created into My Documents all the time that just don't fit into the my upper-level folder structure, which was especially hellish in Win2k where no matter how many times you deleted My Music etc, they always kept reappearing. On a separate partition, there is no such trouble. Also, if your Windows breaks, you can freely format the system drive without worrying about your stuff.

For me, the main features in win 7 are the searchable start menu, the new folder search that I'm desperately trying to revive here and the fact that you can modify the sequence of windows on the taskbar. I also like how the new tray behaves and how you can fix windows to fill half the screen.

While I wrote that, the other PC has re-indexed itself... aaaand it works! No wonder I couldn't remember how I fixed that. It must have worked right outside the box. I just wish I knew how I managed to break it this time around.

Thanks everybody for the input! :)
