S.M.A.R.T. ???

Hello,
Have a newbie/simple question. When building my system, I relied on a friend to assist. In the BIOS he stated to disable S.M.A.R.T and the Cool and Quiet option.
Not knowing what they do I did so, should I have?

SMART monitors your Hard drive for any impending failures and alerts you in advance if it detects anything abnormal with the drive.

Cool n Quiet is AMD's equivalent of Speedstep. It throttles the cpu when you dont need full power, so helps reduce heat generation, keeps the computer cool and saves energy. If you are an overclocker, you'll have little use of it.

Its a bad idea to disable SMART IMO. Cool n Quiet, you can decide based on your preferences- if you are a typical home user, enable it. If you want your machine to run in high performance mode all the time, you dont need it.

Yeah, I can't imagine why anyone would tell you to disable SMART monitoring. Wouldn't you rather know as soon as possible if your hard drive was failing? Granted, it isn't perfect, but it certainly won't warn you if it is disabled!

If it was me, I'd find a new friend to help with computer builds!

Thank you for your responses and your knowledgeable time. Currently using PC Wizard 2010, I've never seen any temperature go above 38 Degrees Celsius, don't game, don't overclock. Don't necessarily want my cpu throttled back, first because I don't understand the concept and second because from the info I can gather I'm running a bit cool.
Thank you for the info on smart. I think I may turn it on. Does it work thru the OS?
