Windows 7 Beta FAST, 7 RC SLOW

    Cannot understand this.

The Beta version was BLAZING fast on one of my PC's. Windows 7 is CRAWLING so slow, I am going to put Vista back on it.

I did a CLEAN install too.

I would not think the RC would be worse than the Beta. This does not give me confidence to buy the final version........

Strange mate, im finding the RC to be loads faster and more reliable then beta. As youve allready wiped the drive clean im out of suggestions. Perhaps programs loaded on maybe? thats the only thing i can think off

It's not slower here. In fact build 7100 thrashes build 7000 with regards to both performance and stability here on my computer. I do not have a single problem.

You might have driver issue or something, I have installed the nvidia driver 179.43 which was intended for the beta, but I have been using that because I find it to be the most accommodating with reference to game play and bugs etc.

I would suggest trying other things because it's not how it was intended. Have you noticed this upon a clean installation. By that I mean did you happen to notice it straight away when your first welcome screen popped up or did you install things and then notice.

Hope you get it sorted because 7100 really is better in every sense of the word than any other previous build imo.

probably your virus scaner... virus scanners are worse than viruses themselves... They waste more cpu cycles over a long period of time than the lost 1 hour of reinstalling windows...

not picking on you today RST, just that you have a few statement that perk my ears/eyes. Can you specify exactly WHAT performance/stability increase that you see/interact with "RC" ? Besides a perf mon screenshot? Have you done a side by side comparison of the two to boldly state this? Not sure if you are reguarding programs, the OS itself, driver issues, gfx issues, etc. I never see any specifics from ppl who claim that the "RC" is superior in stability and performance than the beta. Have you done any compression tests, extraction tests? Office loads the same, just fyi. I have only notice ONE thing different when comparing the two, and its a welcomed change, but its just the loading of the sidebar and gadgets that are slightly faster, and seem not to forget a gadget that you had previously loaded on the desktop. I know the other variable is the gadget itself, but this is seen while using the exact same identical versions of gadgets on both beta and "RC".

Valid questions. There are significant changes though since the original Beta which should have major performance enhancements, especially for machines that aren't quite as powerful. Most of this information was posted on the engineering blog, but it's always good to restate it:)

*The start menu pop up time was greatly improved
*Search speed in the start menu was greatly improved
*WDDM 1.1 drivers are a major gain for RAM usage which in turn was a great gain for swapping of memory on and off the hard drive
*Gameplay has also taken a turn for greater stability, though a lot of this can be attributed to better drivers from manufacterers etc...

You will just have too take my word for it wont you , that in MY opinion and on MY computer the RC is far far better both performance wise and it's stability.

You state that the gadgets load faster, well I can tell you now it all depends on what graphic driver you have because fyi I have noticed they took longer to load with the 185.85 and 81s. I currently use the 179.43s which were intended for the beta. The gadgets themselves are not the only variables, your whole computer environment is a variable, hundreds of thousands of things could possibly have an effect on the loading of your gadgets and that is why we will all have differing results.

It is my opinion as an average home user, with enough juice to game, does not have all kinds of crazy apps running, that windows seven has progressed.

I have gone over this subject ten times but once again, when I was using the beta I found myself with a hanging/freezing computer which would become totally unresponsive and my only way of dealing with it would be to do a hard shutdown. Since it's progression I have found myself doing this less and less often until now where I have NEVER had to do it once with the RC. Also I like to game on a daily basis with all the latest releases. Now under build 7000 I found myself doing all kinds of madness just to get them installed never mind play until once again we find ourselves at build 7100 where once again things have progressed because they all install and play glitch free.

Is it such a bold statement (as you put it) for me to claim that it has got much more stable and responsive on MY computer, that I have non of the trouble I had with build 7000?

start menu i see no change. are we talking 2 ms here? are you trying to load a start menu loaded with installed programs from the beta, and a pretty much clean install with not a 3+months use of registry entries and installed/uinstalled programs? You then would see a problem, or an improvement in performance, of course.
I can validate that the search has been worked on under the hood. Not just does or would this affect a start menu, but it affects the loading of multiple files in one folder faster than the 7000, take for example wallpaper, or my pictures library, or a huge music library. Whether the library includes local internal or external drives/folders or also networked indexed locations... it all loads faster, that i wont contest.
As far as ram usuage, actually, i see this as a decrease compared with my application ridden beta system compared against a 50% worth of the same apps that i have installed so far, and notice the ram usuage is horrible. All the same programs, no changes, i am a creature of habit with this, like a robot.
Lastly, i believe this is all due to gfx drivers, tho i have seen a few glitches using the same drivers as 7000 on 7100. This is acceptable in my view as this IS STILL beta. I dont expect perfection, yet. And the .85 recently released drivers were absolutely horrid for my older 6800gt. ran like a old 64mb 440mx

well your word isnt what i want, proof is in the pudding, be it from your system compared side by side with 7000 vs 7100 on same setup with somekind of diagnostics ran, and stress tests... i mean, you havent referenced any of this. Using sandra, mad onion etc... nothing... just a hearsay statement with which holds no water, or no legs to which stand upon.

Just like if you were going to endorse some candidate for election. Dont just tell me he is a good man, tell me what he stands for, whats his views, why you like him, etc etc etc. Remember some guy named Bush also known as "W"?
