I would recommend you install all updates - with a caveat - pick and choose from the "optional" updates. Some
might include hardware
drivers that don't work as well as the ones you get from the hardware manufacturer. You can hide those. You might also not care to install Windows Live Essentials (I didn't - you can hide that as well).
To clarify, I recommend you install all of the "important" and "critical" updates presented by the Windows Update Utility.
The only "important" ones you might wish to ignore would be those offered from signing up under the "SignUp Tool" opt-in program. However, once you've signed up for it, it's difficult to know what updates are a part of the usual updates and what's a part of the "Sign Up" updates without doing some research.
So far, SP1, as far as I can tell, is the biggest factor regarding the "Sign Up Tool."
