External monitor does not show booting screens

    Hi

I am dual booting windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 on a hp dv4 1162 tx laptop and have it plugged into a Benq monitor. That is the only monitor that i use and don't do any dual monitor things.

My dilemma is that this monitor does not show any of the boot screens and that means that i cannot choose which os to boot into. How can i make it show them.

    Thanks in advance.

Does the boot screen display with the external monitor disconnected?? Download EasyBCD to rebuild your boot options...

    Clarification

It always shows the boot screen on the laptop screen, just not on the external monitor.

There should be a setting on the laptop to set which screen displays by default, this should be in the Bios. if this is controlled by software, (function key selection), then you may have to always use the laptop screen for the actual boot selection as this occurs before the drivers for software selection are loaded

Thanks. I have looked long and hard in the Bios and couldn't seem to find anything. Would there be any key words that I should be looking for?

Basically it should be on the peripherals section - one other thing to try is with windows running check if changing the defaults in the set-up application from the manufacturer, has any effect on the situation - it has been known for this information to be written to the BIOS or boot sector, though not always

    Have a look here ....

Product Specifications - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

that's based on the spec you have added to this site you should be able to find the manual for you particular modol from this page - as for accessing the software this will either be via a desktop/start menu link or key combination

I think you should set the display you want the boot menu to be shown as the primary display! You can do that in the screen resolution dialog

Right click desktop > screen resolution

Or as in my case, use nvidia control panel to do so

I think i have done that already. In the screen resolution under the monitor it says 'this is currently your main display'
