A few days ago, my girlfriend was using my laptop and it shutdown on her randomly. When she tried to boot it back up, it asked her if she wanted to repair or try to start windows normally. She attempted the repair option, but this essentially told her that it could not fix the problem by itself.
When I got a chance to look at it, I noticed the same thing. I also tried going back to restore points, going into safe mode and uninstalling and then reinstalling all drivers, and even attempted enable services and programs individually and then attempt to start up. All of them resulted in the same problem when trying to start normally: We get to the Windows 7 logo, it blinks and then freezes, and then will restart itself.
Eventually I found a forum online that suggested uninstalling the video drivers and starting windows normally, and this actually allowed me to get in to the system without using safe mode. After I got in, I installed the latest drivers from Nvidia for my operating system and GPU. Another crash, so back to safe mode, remove drivers, and get back in to normal starting conditions.
I even tried a suggested method I found on here saying that I should install the drivers using a modified INF file. The explanation was that all of the drivers were made for desktop computers and would often not work. I was pretty confident that the drivers from HP should work on my laptop, and if not, the drivers from Nvidia were specifically for a mobile card, so should work fine in a laptop. Either way, the modified INF file worked exactly as the normal installation.
Finally, I am back to normal windows mode, running on standard VGA graphics. Microsoft has taken the liberty of updating my graphics driver, so when I reboot, I will probably hang and need to remove the drivers. I just don't understand what all of a sudden causes the drivers to lock up windows 7 while it is booting.
The graphics card has been the same since I got this computer with Windows Vista. Since my hard drive crashed, and I didn't want to wait on HP to send restore disks, nor did I want to use a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit processor anymore, I bought Windows 7 and did a clean install. I've been using the same drivers since day 1 without any problems playing any games :WoW, Starcraft 2, League of Legends. Nor have I had problems with running any other software like Office, Flash, Silverlight, photo editing, sound editing. Everything worked fine, until the computer randomly shut down, and now no versions of the nvidia drivers seem to be able install without making the system freeze.
I had wondered briefly if the graphics card is fried, and the system uses the onboard chipset when booting and running in SVGA mode. My guess is that when that little blink during the Starting Windows screen occurs, the graphics card is kicking on and loading its drivers, and it crashes, and gives me the bad driver errors from the Automatic Repair tools. Is this logical?
