Win 7 not detecting monitor

Ok, I have run out of ideas on this..My setup is Windows 7 64, P35 chipset, 4g ddr2,Evga 8600GT dual dvi with dvi to vga converter s-video out, Q6600, 160g pata hdd and a Gateway EV700 (17").
I cannot get Windows 7 to show the desktop, or detect the monitor....I have an LCD TV hooked to the S-video connector and that is the only way I can see the desktop.
The main monitor will show everything up to the point of showing the desktop..that is where the mon goes blank and I have to look at the TV.
Someone suggested I try XP driver for the monitor, but it will not install and just gives a dialog saying that winxp and above already has the drivers nessesary.
I have tried the Windows 7 64 drivers from MS update, Nvidia, and EVGA (both Windows 7 and Vista 64 drivers).
I have tried both monitor outputs. nothing.
I have a KVM which was not an issue for XP, but I am not sure about Windows 7.
Taking out the KVM is my last resort, as I am running out of ideas.
I also tried using an old Diamond Stealth PCI card to no avail....It wouldn't even post with it.
If I had a VGA to S-video converter, I would try that, but for now, I am stuck trying to use Windows 7 on a tv screen that is only 12".
At 1024x768 it's not much fun trying to read anything on it.

I forgot to add that the Nvidia ctrl panel does not show multi display menu

Have you checked the refresh rate and tried others? I dunno, first thing that comes to mind. Also, do a Windows Update if you haven't.

Dunno if I can change the refresh rate on a tv..I will try it though.
Windows update didn't resolve any issues for me...yet.
Thanks,
Doc

Hook up the monitor you are having problems with.

Then you could boot into safe mode with networking and try a windows update like that. Maybe it will do something nice.

Or maybe you could set the refresh rate then, in safe mode. Not sure how that goes, never tried to do this myself.

I dunno what happened, but I started in safe mode, changed to 1024x768 and rebooted, and I used the TV screen to view the settings page and told it to "extend" and my main monitor lit up.
WooHoo! Windows 7 yea baby!

Did you try this?

Force DVI/HDMI resolutions and refresh rates

Sounds like you had a refresh rate problem.

Windows 7 nor Vista detect my monitor correctly. I have to install the drives from the manufacture to get it 100%. It works great as generic so I have stopped reinstalling.
Generic sounds Green like.
