StarCraft 1 is pixelized?

I have a new laptop, which has an ATI 5650 graphics card in it, and when i run StarCraft, it's all pixilated, and I can't fix it. Any ideas?

Try to set some compatibility options for StarCraft.exe:
Run in 256 colors
Disable visual themes
Disable desktop composition

What you need to do is open Task Manager (right click the taskbar and Start Task Manager).

Look for the process 'explorer.exe' and kill it, then try to run the starcraft.exe from the 'File' menu at the top of the Task Manager.

If you need further details on how to do that let me know.

Specifics as to why you would ahve to kill explorer.exe to run Starcraft 1 would be nice.

Theres been numerous people online that report that for some reason killing explorer.exe gets rid of the 24-bit color look to it, which essentially fixes it.

I do not give advice without having some prior knowledge regarding it.

That's cool, it's just there should not be a reason for that..... There are reasons for running things from explorer and not running them outside it. That is what compatibility settings are for.

I would not run an app outside explorer unless I was sure I could trust it. Such as, starcraft installed using game manufacturers disk, yes. Downlaod from internet? No Way.

In most, if not all cases, compatibility settings do not help StarCraft I issues in any way, shape or form.

Also running something from task manager versus running something with Explorer both have the same effect and are not different in any way (expect with games which sometimes can fix visual corruption). They both run the same way in their own process. You are not less safe when running something 'out of explorer'.

If you look at this thread's first post under the 'required tweaks' section you can see some other games also require this.

Ok, I now know it isn't just starcraft. It's pretty much any game that runs at a lower resolution than my desktop it seems. I have anti-aliasing on and stuff, but it seems it isn't fixing it. I've looked through all the settings and everything in these games, and I can't find a solution. Thanks.

Have not tried killing explorer.exe, I doubt it's the problem since the colors are not distorted.

I still suggest giving it a try before ruling it out. Perhaps color distortion wasn't the best choice of words.

Also on older games, the higher you anti-alias it the higher chance there is that the game will look worse due to it showing its 'imperfections'.

Yeah, starcraft 1 was definitely not designed with graphics scaling in mind, nor for hi resolution displays.
