Video RAM Question

Hi,

I was hoping I could get a bit more help. I've been looking up my video RAM and I went to the place to see it and it says

Total Available Graphics Memory: 1695mb

Dedicated Video Memory: 32mb

System Video Memory: 32mb

Shared System Memory: 1631mb

I don't know which one it is that I have since I need 128MB of Video ram.

thank you

brian

PisceanBrian, welcome to the Seven Forums.

This should help explain what those numbers mean,

Video Memory Virtualization - A Brief Guide

as for which one you should be looking at for what is on the video card that would be the 32 MB of dedicated video memory, which isn't enough for Aero to work (or much of anything else these days).

P.S. What video card do you have.

hey neighbour, I'm in Mississauga, just next door!

As for my card, I don't know what I have, I followed some instructions I found online to find out the ram of the card.

Thank you for the explaination. I was seeing if my computer was functional for a sheridan college computer program and they required 128mb of video card memory.

that sucks that my computer i bought last year doesn't have that amount. I'm bummed but thanks for the information and the welcome to the boards.

Grab this,

Speccy - System Information - Free Download

and see what it shows for the video card. I have a feeling it is some Intel onboard junk with 32 MB of its own memory and using 32 MB of system ram from looking at this again,

If it is detected properly (or at all) it will be under Graphics.

Laptop? This is the "video card",

Mobile Intel 45 Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1)

and it is currently using the generic driver that Windows installs. May or may not be better to check the laptop manufacturer's website for the latest driver for it, as they will have modded it to work with the display and any special power saving features they may have added. You could also try the latest Intel reference driver for it which can be found here,

thanks for all your help! I think I'm gonna take it in somewhere for someone to look at it. I think I might have to get a new laptop.

Depending on the age of that laptop, yes.

If you plan to use this for anything more straining than reading word documents and watching the occasional YouTube video, make sure to get a dedicated graphics chip on it. Doesn't need to be a very expensive one though.
