Well it's not worth the upgrade from a 480, but anyone still on a GTX2xx or even an 8/9 series who weren't sure about a GTX4xx, I'd say a 580 is worth upgrading to if they have the money.
HD 5970-esque performance with lower power consumption plus less heat generation vs GF100, that's a big win in my book.
Although as a side note here, I gotta say, all this 'FERMI is too hot too loud issue(s)' is WAY overblown
IMO, I have a GTX 470 myself, and with a pretty standard fan profile done on MSI Afterburner, my load temps never go into the 80s (high 70s). The noise?, yes that's definitely very noticeable, but as a headphone user, that's a non-issue for me.
