    Windows wont recognize graphic card

About a week ago i installed Windows 7 Ultimate x 32 on my old rarely used PC. After installing it everything works great except for one little thing- Windows doesnt recognize graphics card anymore, in device manager its listed as Standard VGA graphics adapter (and the video controller is the only yellow question mark in device manager). And installing ATI drivers does nothing- it gives no errors but nothing actually changes. Tried upgarding drivers from Device manager but the wizard fails to recognize the official ATI drivers as an upgrade.
Now usually i would just go on to conclude that the card has died BUT- before installing 7 Ultimate i had windows 7 basic and everything was working fine. I had CoD 4 installed and it played OK, unlike now when every game gives an error. So im a bit puzzled
The Card is an ATI X800XL, and the fan on it works and its still pretty warm, so shows signs of life. Either it decided to do die on the very day i upgraded Windows (clean install after format though) or Windows 7 is playing tricks on me.
Any idea what to check or try?

    Welcome
Sorry that you are having problems. Have you thought about a driver update?
Even if you are up to date, the driver may be defective.
Same day as the install; thats what makes coincidences fun
What did you upgrade from, Vista? Maybe you need a new driver.

Tried that with about 3 different drivers, but they wont actually do anything if it doesnt find the ATI hardware. Weird thing is i went from Windows 7 Basic to Ultimate and that broke it Even though i used the exact same drivers as before (saved the installer beforehand)

Try an XP driver and Vista driver in compatiblity mode, that has been known to work.
The card will not be recognized until you get a proper driver.

Right click the yellow marked device. Left Click properties and uninstall the driver. Then try to install new driver.

I was trying 4 different versions of drivers, none of them sadly mattered. Then suddenly in device manager the computer started processing and took about 15 seconds to recognize and install everything No idea why or how or what prompted it but not gonna complain since it works now again.

    Thanks for help rich
