You wouldn't be able to see anything. The grinding noise occurs when the ball bearings go ( at one point the balls start showing wear and don't run "round" anymore, causing the fanblades to tumble.)
Simple solution: you need a new fan. In cases of emergency (like you can't get your hands on a new fan anytime soon) there is a way to prolong the life of the fan a little bit. You get some graphite powder from your automotive supplier, peel back the fan label and carefully put a little bit onto the center of the fan.
I really mean CAREFUL the stuff is worse on cloth than laser toner
Make sure to put the label back on and don't use any form of oil..it will only cause a mess.

    i see,
i turned pc back on and its going fine so far, no problem, ive had this card less than a year, how does the ball bearing wear out so quick, i play like 1 game a week.
    not even
also would the manufacturer take it back? its still under warranty..
or are there any after market coolers for the 5000 series?

Don't think, the fan only runs when you play a game But you're right...a year is a rather short time for a fan to phase out.
Talk to the manufacturer if your warranty covers fans. There must be aftermarket coolers available
But since there are so many different 5850 models out there you have to look for yourself like here

Else just punch "ati hd 5850 aftermarket cooler" in google and see what fits your specific model

i see thank you, i know the fan runs all the time lol i just never hear it going higher until i play a game. anyway, i have found a v100 cooler on newegg for about 50 bux that seems to fit on a 5850 as so the reviews say.
    i appreciate the help :)

you're very welcome...I just hate when that happens...from the looks of it the card is not a cheapy and to have the fans replaced after only one year is definitely wrong.

I would check with my seller before spending those $50.. Fan producers have Mondays too, ya know

    Thanks for the feedback
