My screen picture is too wide!

Hi I have just installed Windows 7 on my 14 inch widescreen laptop. My problem is that the ratio is wrong. A perfect square becomes a rectangle and it looks stupid. So a perfect square is more broad than it is high. I would like a perfect square to look like a perfect square on my screen! Maybe it's something with the ratio 3:4 compared to 16:9? Anyway how do I change it? I have been looking at what I think is my graphics card it says:

    standard vga graphics adapter

Please beware that I am not that technical!

    Please help me!

try to run windows updates. That should make the driver for the monitor install...
After that play with your resolutions until you find one you like.

That's a laptop, so monitor driver is not the issue. Could you please tell what graphics adapter you have? At least give the exact name nad model of your laptop.

    Some further info

Hi Guys thank you for your replies

    But the problem persists

I have installed all the recomended updates through Windows Update.

To try to get less wide image I go to:

Control Panel -> Adjust screen resolution

    There it says:

Display: 1. Generic Non-Pnp Monitor on Standard VGA Graphics Adapter

    I only have too options:
High 1024 X 768 (This is the one I choose)
    Low 800 x 600

I have also tried to go to:
Advanced Settings -> List All Modes

I have played around with the settings there, but nothing is better than the one I have chosen which is:
1024 by 768, True Color (32 bit), Default Refresh

The name of my Laptop is "Plus Lite Zitech Notebook (8011 PRO) It was kind of state of the art, good quality, PC in 2005 - 2006 when I bought it.

About my Adapter Type it says its a:
    Standard VGA Graphics Adapter
    Chip Type: Intel(r)852GM/852GME/855GM/855GME Graphics
    DAC Type: 8 bit
    Adapter String: VGA
    Bios Information: Hardware Version 0.0

If you want to know more about my PC, then please tell me!

Again thank you for your help and I hope you can help solving my problem.

    Chip Type: Intel(r)852GM/852GME/855GM/855GME Graphics
There is no Windows 7 driver for that,

Graphics — Older Intel® graphics controllers and Microsoft Windows 7* operating system

and the last XP driver for it,

    Hi Kari

On the back of my PC is written:

Plus Lite Zitech Notebook (8011 PRO)

So its a Notebook Zitech 8011 PRO (Zitech is the manufacture name, a Danish computer)

Install the XP driver, only way you're going to get it to work at the proper resolution. Try installing normally and if that doesn't work then install it using compatibility mode,

Totally agree with Stormy. Checked the Google, it seems your laptop is a bit older so called "supermarket" model.
