Have you tried moving the app window to the 2nd display and closing, then opening it? I use UltraMon and if I close in a program in the 2nd display, it will open in it from the start menu.

I have the SAME PROBLEM!
In Windows XP and a lower generation card - I am able to customize the display i.e. (Display 1 and Display 2 OR Display 2 and Display 1) in other words you can FREELY choose which one is designated Primary or #1. REPEAT in Windows XP there is no such issue.

For some CRAZY, reason you can only ASSIGN which one you want temporarily, Windows 7 seems to assign my reciever (Denon 989) as #1 (no option to change) - when all devices are powered on, you can freely choose mix and match.

The second I turn off my TV (hdmi through to receiver) I'm locked into extended view (although assigned as primary) but has flipped back. This is entirely depend on power on and off. Insanely frustrating is that I'm trapped in extended view "Windows P" toggle does not work and you cannot access settings - so I have to power my TV to get control back.

I'm at a loss as to why this is - again, XP works fine. I went to my computer store and they gave me a load of BS about HDMI compliancy blah, blah, blah....but I think the blame squarely lies on the developers of Windows 7 who feel they need to change everything (i.e. show desktop icon, move that to the right and not make it available on the left).

If anyone knows a simple fix, please tell me. I'm tired of rebooting and recofiguring my settings ad nauseum.

Also if any MS moderator is listening out there...I have spent hours trying to make my displays function properly, moving from nvidia cards to ati and so I know this issue intimately. I'm wondering who I can send an invoice for my time to?

I have two 19 inch LCD's connected to GT220, one DVI and one VGA. I have several programs that open on my secondary monitor when I launch them. All I had to do was move the open window for that program to my second monitor and close the program. After that it opens to the second monitor when I launch it.

Thanks for the reply.

YES.

This works, but why do I have to do that? Sometimes my extended screen is just that, blank. Why do I have to anticipate a shut down and move something over there? I didn't have to in Windows XP at all.

If I've designated my #2 as primary it should stay that way (it did in XP) but as soon as I turn off my power to either device (receiver or tv) I get locked back in extended mode with no options (Window key+P) dont work.

Some of whats been posted here is confusing me? For the record "extended" means your desktop is extended across two or more monitors. If only one monitor is working, and it doesn't matter which one, you are not in extended mode. You are in computer only mode. Also a monitor can be designated as no 1 and not be your main display. Monitor 1 or 2 can be set as the main display. It sounds like the problem is one of your displays is a TV and is only detected by windows if its turned on. Turn it off, windows can't see it, assumes its not there, and defaults back to the other monitor. Its ether that or the video card. I know on mine during boot up and at the windows welcome screen, only one monitor works. I don't get the second monitor until I hit my windows desktop. If I have both monitors connected only the one connected to the DVI connector works during the boot up. If I disconnect it, the one connected to the VGA connector works. My video card does this not windows. In XP (different video card) both monitors would mirror the BIOS screen and windows login screen. Once windows loaded my desktop my display would be extended.

Alphanumeric...what you suggested to me FIXED my problem.
BEFORE i dragged anything into my Extended screen - turning off the power - would switch my designated primary back to extended view - I would be trapped in extended view until I turned the power on.

AFTER I dragged another program window into my extended view and powered off I am now able to power off and my designated primary settings stay on my computer monitor.

You are a genious! Just for the record, I spoke to Nvidia and ATI technical support for hours and they could not help me - so many, many red herrings and misdirection about HDMI incompatiblilty, techies insisting I had to plug my HDMI cable from my TV to computer and forgo my receiver altogether. THIS WAS AN INSANE waste of time.

Thank you again for helping me with my problem
