Windows 7: Trouble with SLi

Trouble with SLi

Hi guys, I just installed a second GTX 285 to my computer setup and ran into some problems. To save me from typing everything out I will copy my posts from another forum.

Okay, so I just installed a second GTX 285 today so that I can finally run SLi. I hooked everything up properly and enabled SLi in the nVidia Control Panel and all seemed well. Then I decided to test out my newest addition in COD:BO and this is where it got weird.

When in-game the screen is very jumpy. Sometimes only the bottom half or so would jump side to side and also I'd notice the screen turn blue a bit. I am not sure what the issue is. I am going to try out other games through the night but I decided to post here to see if I can get any suggestions.

Here are my PC specs:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Motherboard: MSI NF980-G65
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 OC'd @ 3.6ghz
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3
GPU: EVGA Nvidia GTX 285 1GB x2 (SLi)
Sound: Onboard w/ Logitech Z5500
Monitor: LG W2353V 23" 1080p
PSU: Rosewill Xtreme Series RX850-D-B 850W
HDD: 2x WD Caviar Black 1TB, 200GB Maxtor, 700GB External
I'd also like to note that the settings in the nVidia control panel were:
SLI Configuration: Maximize 3D Performance
PhysX settings: Auto-select (recommended)

I tested out L4D2 and it was the same way. When in menus the display would be fine, but once I start highlighting menus it would freak out. Loading screens are fine, gameplay is slightly jumpy.

Just restarted my computer and the nVidia control panel changed my settings to:
SLI Configuration: Maximize 3D Performance
PhysX settings: GeForce GTX 285 (2)

I am going to see if the change in PhysX settings did anything.
So the change in PhysX settings did nothing for me. I disabled SLi and everything is fine now. This is my first time ever using SLi in a build, so I have no clue what is wrong.

The only thing that comes to mind is a bad video card, but it can't be. My old video card was fine, never gave any issues. I put the new card into the primary slot in my computer and have my monitor plugged into it, and everything appears fine. So I am sure it has nothing to do with a bad video card.

Maybe there is something I have to do on the motherboard/in the BIOS??

Have you got your SLI bridge on the correct way? I have some problems when I had it on the correct way. Some bridges are required to be connected a specific way.

I wasn't sure if there was a correct way to put on the sli bridge. I will mess around with that tomorrow and post up the results.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit

I tried both cards separate and they are fine, also moved the sli bridge around to no avail.

I did a lot of googling last night and found out a lot of people had the same issue. It took a while to figure out what to search for, but the most common thing people call the issue I'm having is flickering and horizontal screen tearing.

I decided to just sell one or both of the cards since the super high temps is not worth the performance gains of SLI. If I get both cards sold I will just get a single 580.

Windows 7 Professional 64 bit

Or you could consider a 570 as they are now on the market..faster than the current 480 within reason...cant run busloads of AA/AF and super high res like a 480 due to gimped bandwith..I have just (like yesterday) fitted 2x 460s and I think they are going already lol
and price isnt too bad...lot cooler single slot design less power...lots to like about them
