Sounds like you've run into a problem that's common in laptops: Sony may have used a nonstandard device ID for the onboard graphics.
Something that may work: install the Vista
drivers:
VAIO : Sony Europe
They'll probably function under Windows 7 without any additional work. Once they are installed, you'll probably receive newer drivers through Windows Update, and you may be able to download and install the latest drivers directly from nVidia.
I went through that with my cheap Compaq laptop, with 8200M graphics.
