GeForce FX5200

When I went to microsot windows7 page to download the RC, i saw that this windows requires DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver. I have DirectX 9 but WDDM is only for Vista (i think), and i'm now using XP. I have nVidia GeForce FX5200 128MB and my question is, can i install windows7?
I have Pentium4 3.0GHz with 2GB of RAM
Thanks

I looked online a little bit, and from what I've read, the FX5200 is compatible with WDDM 1.0, so you should be able to install and run Windows 7, at least with basic settings. I'm not certain if you'll be able to have all the alpha blending effects that come with the "Aero" interface.

Off-Topic: A very reliable card you have there. I used to run one a couple of years ago.

Thanks riott. I'll try it.

Yes it will work. You will have to do a clean install, as you can't upgrade from XP.

Since Windows 7 is basically a better, lighter, and all-around enhanced version of Vista, it comes with that.

Also, Windows 7 has DirectX 11. However, there are no cards that can support it (for now!).

I bought myself that very card from a second-hand parts shop so I could give Windows 7 (and compiz-fusion) a go and I'm also glad to hear riott say its a good card.

I only have 1.25 GB Ram and a AMD Duron 1.4ghz. I have had to drop to the low graphics version and it is working fine (though I am still evaluating).

When I installed it a few weeks back I ran Aero and very nice it was too but it got worse so I stopped looking at it. I don't know if its the card or the general low spec that lets it down.

I would suggest upgrading to a newer card. A new Radeon HD4670 goes for less than $100, I think.

You got one of those in AGP or PCI? Somehow I doubt that newmo's old Duron based computer has a PCI-E slot.

Whoops, my mistake.

Go with an HD3870. I think it's AGP.

HD3850, in my specs is the best one for AGP ever made. Any variant, even if cheaper of the 3850 would be excellent. I run HAWX DX10 mode highest settings at 1680x1050 with good framerate, no stutters.
