Does having 2 monitors effect game fps

I have 2 monitors 1 hooked to an HDMI and the other hooked to a standered VGA will having them both connected affect performance

If you are rendering on two monitors you are doubling the load on the graphics card. If one monitor is just displaying normal desktop items and the other the game, the decrease should be less noticeable. In that scenario turning off aero theming would also problem help the hit a little.

i always turn my second monitor off while gaming, then my gfx card can concentrate on one screen, rather than two.

it has to be faster - not twice as fast, but certainly faster.

Performance loss should be negligible provided you're using only one monitor for gaming and the other is just idle. However, some games do not react well to this configuration (Splinter Cell Chaos Theory) and require that just one monitor be configured as active.
