Vid card not running at full x16 speed.

I would at least check the BIOS before packing it all up and sending it away.

What do you mean society?

On another crappy note... my dfi board gets to the post screen and hangs... So looks like the video card goes too...

edit: Ok now I'm completely lost... all I did was swap the little 4 pin on the psu and it booted just fine. I'm going to start pulling hair if I don't get this figured out. The only things that are the same from the new computer and this old one are the video card and the psu... hmmmm....

Please read the owner's manual for your MB and make sure everything is correctly hooked up and in place. In short..... RTFM!

And what society means is make sure you have the latest BIOS update for the board before sending it back. Otherwise you're going to be in the same boat with a replacement board.

Hey Nerotoxen,

There are about 10 BIOS updates for your board M4A79XTD EVO, if that is your board ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards - ASUS M4A79XTD EVO (your system specs say M4A79XTO - can't find that board on the Asus site). The updates pertain to newer CPU support and system stability. I would check to make sure you have the latest BIOS for that board. It may be the answer to your troubles. Good luck!

I've read the manual plenty of times. What you quoted syg was what happened on my old computer. It wouldn't post and I swapped one of the 4 pin plugins from my psu into the dfi lanparty board. My psu has 2 four pin connections for the mobo. When I put my old dfi lanparty board together with my new video card and new psu it ran fine for a bit then I had to restart windows (updates) and the only thing that came on during rebooting was the fans. So I swapped that 4 pin with the other and it booted up just fine.

As far as the bios updates. I do appologize I had written down the wrong one in my specs, but rest assured I have the latest bios installed. I used the bios updater included with the mobo cd. I think its 2701 version.

Could a possible bad psu cause the videocard to not run full speed @ x16? And cause the random bsods, along with the only thing coming on during reboot is the fans? Not even the keyboard comes on.

Thanks for your patience and help you guys have no idea!

Don't know if a faulty PSU would cause a PCIe slot to run at 16x. However I did experience BSOD and boot ups where only the fans were running due to a loose connection on my PSU. Radeon 6850 sporadic crashes

So it's highly possible that what you are experiencing is due to the PSU. Guess you don't have another PSU to test with?

I have a Sunbeam NUUO 550w. I just don't know if it will be enough to power all of the hardware. I suppose I could try it, but maaaaaaan I just took it all apart lol!

There is no harm in trying. At least you may determine that your motherboard and video card is fine.

Looking at the specs of it should be more than enough,

One question about it though, how long have you had it? Power supplies can and do degrade over time, and I am finding reviews of that model from back in 2005. If yours is of similar age and been used all along in another build, it may well be time to look at a replacement.

Very good point! But with 2 PSU’s he may be able to determine the root of his problems. I would use it as a reference only. However…if they are both bad (or not up to snuff!!) then unfortunately he’s nowhere closer to finding a solution.
