Screen resolution not stable.

A friend some distance away is having problems with screen resolution. Namely when switching on it appears at '680' and he has to correct resolution by visiting Control/Display and making adjustments. Having done that it appears at the recommended resolution but reverts without warning at irregular intervals.
I've suggested installing a new graphic card driver - the existing driver is some 2 years old - and I provided him with the 'url' to obtain same and instructions on how to go about it. Unfortunately he seems reluctant to do so but continues to complain of problem.
I'd be obliged if someone could confirm if I'm giving the correct advice or perhaps recommend any other method to correct the fault.

It seems the best advice you might be able to give him at this point would be to direct him here, ecourage him to register, and present his problem first hand.

Giving him time to see the community first hand and the vast problems solved on a daily basis might help him to become less reluctant to take on a driver upgrade task.

More on topic, it's tough to solve this with as little information given, but as Minotar pointed out, updating drivers would, at the least, take one item off the list of possibilities.

Thank you Ageeb & Minotar for your prompt replies. Actually we are both well into our 70's and I was being diplomatic using the word 'reluctant'; it should have been 'nervous'. My knowledge of PC's is reasonable while he is still in the earlier stages of IT. I will further attempt to get him to change the driver which will at worst move us a step forward. In addition I will also attempt to get him to visit Windows 7 Forums. I agree they cover a large range of problems and I've been helped myself on more than one occasion.
