I would go with a 5850 or 6950
either would do fine. The 5850 is about 180 and the 6950 is a little over 200 all the way up to 300 depending on model/make.
I'm using a 5850 myself and the only thing that has given me any trouble so far is metro 2033 maxed in dx11 and from what I've seen online, nothing really seems to play it quite right.
Um.. a new GTX 460 768 mb is 149.99 on newegg Newegg.com - ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU TOP/2DI/768MD5 GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 768MB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card . If i was your friend, I wouldn't buy it.
AMD cards stronger than GTX 460: 5850, 5870, 5970, 6850(?), 6870, 6950, 6970, 6990
I notice your question mark next to the 6850, the 5850 is actually a noticeably better card than it. I don't know what they were thinking with the 68xx cards, but they just don't really meet the performance of the 58xx cards.
Two 6850's in crossfire should do the trick for you. :)
