Main display goes black when I connect VGA secondary monitor

Hi,

The main screen of my tablet PC goes black as soon as I plug-in the VGA cable to a second monitor. I guess this is the result of me selecting an incorrect display mode for the monitor. The secondary monitor (A Samsung 1920x1200) complains of the video signal mode and does not display anything other than an error window.

The dual display mode worked fine before I made that mistake. I guess the resolution used for the secondary monitor is now incorrect. I would need to reset that value with the secondary monitor disconnected. That's what I am looking for.

Now when the VGA cable is disconnected, I get back the screen. I have looked at all display controls and the 945gm controls, but I had no luck restoring the secondary monitor settings.

I have tried booting Windows7 with the secondary monitor connected. I get both the main display and the monitor working in mirror mode when in BIOS mode, but I loose both as soon as windows7 is activated.

I would need some means to have windows7 reset the whole display subsystem.

Does anyone knows how to solve this issue.

Thanks for any clue.

Richard

PC is Motion LE1700, L7400 dual processor, 1440x1050
Secondary monitor is Samsung 1920x1200

I assume from your display resolution that you have a Samsung T260 ?

You can get the correct driver for it here;

http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/de..._mdl_name=T260

Quite a few machines require that you switch them over to an external display. How this works ,varies from machine to machine.

You may also need to click on the desktop, "Screen Resolution", and choose "Extend these displays";

This is the problem I have: I can't get there because my main display becomes black as soon as plug-in the VGA connector...

That driver installs automatically with windows;

Windows 7 Compatibility for Samsung 245T 24" LCD: Samsung. Drivers, Updates, Downloads

But to be sure I would re-install it if I were you. I would also prefer the manufacturer's site for getting the driver;

The Samsung site is playing up as usual, but you can get the driver here;

If you unplug the external display, can you get to "Screen Resolution" on the desktop then?

PS. Some of the Samsung monitors need to be manually switched over to analogue (VGA) display characteristics. This is usually a button on the side of the display.

Sorry, this is the 275t. I went on Samsung site to have alook at the manual and I saw a driver for older versions of Windows only. I am quite sure I get the latest Windows7 driver through Windows Update. I'll double check anyway.

I get to "Screen Resolution" for the main screen only. Controls for the external monitor are greyed out.

Check in "Advanced settings", that screen refresh rate is correct for your monitor. Make sure you check the box "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display". If you clear this box, and select a mode the monitor cannot use, then you may damage it!!

Also open "Properties" in "Advanced settings", and if necessary uninstall the driver.

When the device is then plugged in again, Windows should detect it and ask for a driver.

Hi Mike,

I installed the latest driver for the SM275TPlus from the Samsung web site, but the behavior has not changed. The tablet screen becomes black as soon as I plug-in the VGA connector.

I then uninstalled the Samsung monitor driver. I get the same behavior (a black screen) except that Windows now use the" Generic PNP driver" without asking.

I feel that something deeper in the Windows parameters needs to be reset with regedit. I don't know what.

At last, this problem is resolved. It was just a matter of turning the tablet off and on (not just a reboot) and then "mirror displays" worked again . This is a frustrating experience for everyone...

Thanks Mike for your patience.
