I hope this thread isn't closed yet, as I wanted to make some input.

I have the same problem as the threadstarter. Whenever I select lower resolution than recommended (which is at 1920x1200), the black borders appear. I 1st noticed this when launching Fallout3. My laptop don't handle max resolution in games very well, so I wanted to lower it a bit. Which worked nicely in Vista, but apparently not so well in Windows 7. It doesn't matter where or in which game/app I lower the resolution. Black borders appears to fill out the screen whenever the resolution is lower than 1920x1200. Very annoying...

    Any thoughts?

    Resolution problem solved

Solved the black border issue. Installed the Catalyst 8.12 for Vista, and set my desktop properties to "filled" instead of default "centered". Odd that this slipped under the radar of the ATI beta team

    Cheers!

    Hi Guys!

I have the same problem but I could not solve it yet. Any res lower than native ends up with a black frame around the screen that annihilates my gaming I have my monitor plugged in through a DVI converter. Maybe my problem is with scaling, but in nVidia's control panel there is no flat panel scaling option furthermore I can't find any driver for my monitor too (because it is a generic PnP, no driver needed). I can't figure out how should I change the monitor's scaling settings. Until now there was no problem with it, these symptoms appeared yesterday so I have no idea what should I do to resolve it.

I would highly appreciate if someone clever helped me! Thanks in advance!

Try to press Ctrl+Alt+F11 while in game...
Screen change into 3 modes, 1 the resolution doesn't use the full screen, 2 the same of the first option and 3 the screen, with any resolution, is in fullscreen.
    That worked for me...

Ctrl+Alt+F11 has no effect on my computer unfortunalety :S Any ideas? If i could make the flat panel scaling tab visible in nvidia cp i think my problem could be solved.

Of courseno driver not working. You have to get the right driver (give us your computer specs and we might be able to help) and install it for the monitor to work.

    Waiting for info

Hi Ken sorry i didn't reply sooner,i've done a few installs of Windows 7 from the 7100 RC X86 to the 7600 RTM X64,which is what im running now.
My motherboard's a Foxconn P4M9007,im using a PCI Express graphics card.
A Radeon HD 2400 Pro,im using a Vista and Win 7 x64 ATI driver that was released yesterday.
I've disabled the driver in safe mode as i wasn't getting any signal to the monitor.
The taskbar looks kind of strange without the aero, but it runs.
I've changed back to XP as the default OS for now.

Same problem here I'm afraid. I've got an Nvidia 8600 GT and my preferred resolution (on my CRT monitor) is 1280x960 but when I switch to that resolution, the resolution doesn't really change, but the viewport gets smaller and there are huge black borders around it. I've just installed the latest drivers (downloaded from Nvidia).

And I can't enlarge the viewport via the monitor controls because even if I max them out, it's not enough to reach the edges of the monitor.

    Any ideas?

EDIT: I solved it by adding a custom resolution via the Nvidia Control Panel.

This is a problem in the latest ATI Catalyst 9.8 Beta, even though it has a "greyed" out option to choose between filled and centered screen aspect. Why ATI hasn't addressed this is beyond me, but it's a big annoyance. I'm still using the modified 8.12 Catalyst drivers for my HD2600 XT, to get a decent 1280x800 resolution on which to play games on.
