resolution and 60Hz vs 70Hz (problem in Windows 7)

Here is a newly installed Windows 7. The problem is:
It is in 800x600 and 60Hz
When I set it to 1024x768 windows 7 changes it to 70Hz.
(Note that this monitor has no support for 1024x768 at 70Hz.)
Why the hell it is changing to 70 Hz? I'm not touching the 60Hz-70Hz settings.

^ LOL, uninformed are we, there are plenty of monitors, some brand new, that don't support 70Hz. I am typing on a laptop, and the refresh rate on this 7 monhts machine, doesn't support more then 60hz.

to the OP, can you maybe hide the modes that are not supported by your monitor, advanced settings.

Uninformed nothing. I wasn't talking about the refresh rates. I was talking about 800x600 and 1024x768.

To the latter 2 posters: Can we keep this civilised, please?

    To Darkhorn,

What is the make and model number of your monitor? Have you checked the manufacturer's website for drivers? A monitor driver is not a true driver in the sense of the word, rather it is more of an information file which informs your system of the monitor's capabilities, i.e. its supported resolutions and associated screen refresh rates for each resolution. Having said that, it is unusual for a refresh rate to default to 70Hz without being set at that value. Which graphics driver are you using?

I have packaged the case and send it to the owner (a 11 year old boy). I guess he will not have that problem.

I guess the problem was due to the graphic card: GeForce Fx7300 (obviosly)
My monitor is: ! wt*! model name: JD166LS, from JEAN COMPANY LTD.
    manufactured in Malasia /March 2000

My monitor has no problem in my Windows 7, GeForce Fx5200 /at 1024x768 and 60Hz.

    Old graphic cards are better!

Is Windows showing your monitor as a "generic PNP monitor" ?

    Google your monitor model.
Download the driver from the manufacturer.
Try updating your "generic PNP monitor" to the manufacturers driver
    first.That might fix it.
    If not...
    extract to a folder.

There should be a .inf file there, open it in notepad.

Here is a section of my inf file

I was on a ati board somewhere where somebody had this issue and they were saying you could add/edit any refresh rate here.
I'm sorry I dont have the link as it was not an isssue for me.
