i finally got my hands on the 9000 driver (XDDM) included w vista. i installed it and found that most of the screensavers were now working, however, i ran into an issue with windows media player - as my computer locked up. i'm still trying other ideas and will post what i find.

Performance Test Locks System Too

Running the performance test also locks my system the same as trying to play a video.

Turn Hardware Acceleration off

After testing different options, I have found that videos will play when turning Hardware Acceleration down to the first notch, or presumably completely off. This can be done without rebooting. You can find the setting under the Troubleshooting tab under the Advanced Settings of the Display settings (where you adjust screen resolution). I can turn it down, watch a video then turn it back up once done and all seems to be fine so far.

rwczen - how much ram does your system have? curious if this might have something to do with it. i'm only 512mb, just ordered a chip to upgrade 1gb.

I have 512MB. I don't think RAM will have an affect. The system just locks in an odd way, it as if things are still happening in the background, but video and input are locked.

XP Vista 7

Ram doesn't matter, it's the video driver. I don't know whether it's because they're xp drivers, or if there's some kind of DX problem. I get the usual frozen screen of death when I try any kind of 3d program, even chess on an Inspiron d600 with the Radeon 9000.

Yeah, hopefully there will be a patch. I can't imagine it not working in 7 when it works fine in Vista. Could just be an oversight in the code. I wouldn't expect a whole new driver though.

I haven't had any problems with the SP27665 driver. I ran Chess with it and it does a decent job. Had to drop the resolution due to low video memory (16MB). Didn't surprise me, though.

You *HAVE* to extract the SP27665 driver with a program like WinRAR, don't just run the executable. Then, get the properties of your video card (probably Standard VGA adapter) and update it with this one.

I'll try it on my ThinkPad R40 soon, along with the Inspiron 5100.

With Hardware Acceleration down, is the 2D performance OK? Using the Standard VGA driver, simple 2D things like scrolling up/down a website with embedded flash is extremely slow, dragging a window across the screen makes it redraw constantly, etc.

If 2D is OK, I can live with that, I would not play games on my laptop.
