3d mode when watching video (ATI)

Since installing 11-6 drivers i've noticed my gpu is going into 3d mode when i'm watching a video and i can start hearing my fans.
I know with youtube videos you disable the hardware acceleration but unsure how to disable it when watching a film.
Anyone know how to fix this.
Thanks........
