Problem with multiple graphics cards

Hi I have an Nvidia 9500GT and recently, I upgraded my mobo ram and cpu, my card worked fine until then. I started to play games the other day and it kept crashing 5 mins in, so i tried the drivers etc and nothing changed. So i dug out an old card an nvidia 8500gt and plugged it in again it was working fine for a while then same thing happened. I am starting to think my new mobo has a faulty pcie slot could this be correct anything else I can test?

Please uninstall your card driver and install this driver (which is the correct one)
Use custom install and select to perform a clean install!

Tried that just there same outcome lasted a few minutes then froze. Starting to think hardware problem, don't know what bit though?

What's the likelihood of it being the PSU its 500W some budget brand eezcool or something standard ATX.
Components are
AMD Phenom ii x 4 3.2 running at 3.86ghz
4gb (2x2gb) Kigston 1600mhz blu
DVDRW
DVDROM
CARD READER
1.5TB hdd
VIA6421 Sata card nothing connected just now
XFX 9500 GT graphics card
Mobo MSI 880GM-E41

I have run furmark and GPU does not go above 64 degrees on full load and thats when the card is maxed out. Problems actually persisted before card oc though, and occurs when not OC. When gaming GPU is typically at around 46 degrees.

I have a few more PC's in the house so I will try the card in them and the games and see if the problem persists. I hope its not the board as its new but I sold the last one and used the box and besides its been a really good wee board.

You've done some overclocking which draws more power. With an budget brand PSU it is possible that your system isn't getting enough power, but someone else would have to confirm that. 800 is usually the standard PSU, Most systems now-a-days seem to be equipped with at least 750W, at least from what I've seen. 500W is low in my opinion, and I think there is a watt software tool that can calculate all that for you, if someone knows what its called?

If you install it in other computers, make sure you can find higher PSUs and the right driver to go with the GPU. Let us know if the card works in any of the other systems

Here you can calculate the exact Wattage needed, this works very precisely IMO (fill in everything)

Yes, budget PSUs ususally underperform their Watt number, but if you wouldn't oc it might be enough.

@DustSailor My system needs about 460 Watts, I haven't Ocd my cpu yet, but I'm sure there will be no problems. Your cpu is the part of a tipically high power consumption series AFAIK, I can understand why you think 500w is low, but it is not.

I thought it was low because I couldn't be bothered to look up how powerful the card that was mentioned was, and there are many things you can have going on in a system that adds to the power draw. He overclocked both the CPU and the GPU it seems, and it did seem suspicious that the better GPU caused the system instability. I suppose 500W from a branded PSU would not be bad, depending on power placement within the PSU, but even if you COULD do it with a 500W, I like playing it safe i guess. I know my 1000W is way more than I need in my own system, but i can't help it, especially if I'm going to upgrade later down the road. 600W seems more on the safe side, and sorry for just throwing number out there (ie 750, 800W), but I was just thinking. I don't mean to make you Desmond go out and buy a whole bunch of new things, just wanna see whats going on inside that case of yours. Still think it is a good idea to attach a bigger (higher Wattage) PSU to that system and see if everything turns out well (unless you do not have one, in that case let us know)
