Yeah I would wait for an official fix that specifically states what has changed and that it will solve the problem we have.

I was unable to get a help request through the AMD site since it was flooded and it kicked back as undelivered.

I did send in a ticket to XFX though so we will see where that goes.

    UPDATE:

I managed to get through to AMD and I also got a reply back from XFX.

    From AMD:
    Response and Service Request History:
if you have had no problems with the previous driver version and the problems started just with the newest one, please roll back to the Catalyst 11.7 version. Namely, we expect the newest driver version to come out in the next 7-10 days.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation. If you encounter similar problems with the newest driver version again, please let us know and this ticket will be processed with the highest priority.

I also am working with XFX at the moment. They tested all the cards I mentioned and said it was not a wide spread issue but was still an issue and asked me for a few additional bits of info.

I hope the update from AMD corrects this issue though.

Anyhow that is what I got so far.

I believe I'm also having this problem with my XFX Radeon HD 6850. Ever since I installed the update, the screen freezes up within seconds. That is-- unless I quickly jumpstart my AMD Core Line program. If that is running, it's fine. If it isn't, it freezes. Normally, it would start itself at startup.

Is this just the same issue you're discussing here? If so I'll have to just wait for a fix, I suppose. If not, I'll go start another thread to help solve this mystery.

I did hear back from XFX.

Here is what they sent me:

We have seen a similar behavior reported for the 4850 units beyond 11.5 driver, and are checking into it. So you should be able to load the 11.5 driver without a problem on these units. The 6970 has no known issues with the latest 11.8 driver package. - Erik

I am running the 6970 so I specifically asked about that card. The biggest issue seems to be 4850 cards and is pretty specific to that exact model however that does not rule out that there are problems with other models. It does mean that a variety of 4850 cards will see issues in this case tested and proven on the xfx 4850 cards.

The last reply I got back from AMD about this issue they simply told me that there would be a new driver release soon and that I should wait and see if that resolved the issue and if it did not I should reply back to the ticket and they would look into it as a high priority issue.

I rolled back my driver to 8.861 (for the 6850). I'll see if that helps when I start up again- ... tomorrow.

I installed 11.8 on my xfx 6970 and it works fine. I think it actually fixed some things for this card.

Is this the correct update for a HIS 4850 Card also? Thanks! :)

    Hello p5200,

Yes, that card is included as well for the 11.8 AMD driver version. :)
