I saw a thread about two weeks ago with someone asking about that cursor issue. Too bad I can't remember who it was now.

The funny thing is that the 9.12 hotfix drivers was supposed to "fix" the large cursor problem

My display drivers keeps restarting!!!
here is what happens, first my display freezes for about 5 secs.(except for my mouse, I can still move my mouse when this happens), then right after the 5 secs. my monitor goes all white, then my display crashes and shuts off, then it restarts and everything is back to normal. then I get this error message:

note that the driver fails to restart itself every now and then. roughly 1:10 times, in which case I have to restart my entire rig because then my display just freezes (this time including my mouse), ctrl+alt+del seems to be nonresponsive (or atleast it seems that way cuz if it does I would have no way of knowing since my display is frozen)
this has been recurring for almost a week now and I've been trying to fix it since to no avail. all my drivers are up-to-date even my BIOS. my entire rig is new and is running at defaults at the moment and still the same problem. here are my rig details:
OS: Windows7 Ultimate x64
monitor: HP LP2475w (24" IPS Monitor)
mobo: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 (BIOS updated to F5 [latest])
cpu: Intel i7 920 (D0)
vga: xfx Radeon HD 5970 gddr5 2gb
ram: Kingston HyperX ddr3 2gbx6 (12 gigs total, and has ramcooling [air])
soundcard: Creative SB X-fi XtremeGamer
HDD: WD 150GB Veloci Raptor (10k rpm primary system drive), WD 1.5TB Green Caviar (secondary data drive)
PSU: Corsair HX1000w
any help on the matter will be much appreciated. I need your inputs guys. Diagnostic software I have on is Lavalys Everest Ultimate and TechPowerUp GPU-Z. Also I dunno if this is relevant but the CPU, Chipset, and VGA are watercooled. CPU idles at 39C and VGA at 28C so it cant be hardware related. hoping for your assistance. thanks.

Did you install the Catalyst drivers yourself, or are they from Windows Update?

EDIT:

It may a 2d/3d idle clock speed issue:
