Generic Non-PnP Monitor on Standard VGA Graphic Adapter

OK as Ive been looking around the site Ive noticed that there are many issues like this one, and Im sure there are plenty of people out there that have this problem...

My "Windows Experience Index" is at a 1.0 only because my Graphics, and Gaming Graphics rating are at 1.0. Everything else is at 5.9 which I can live with.

When I look at my adavanced settings for my monitor it Shows my Nvidia GPU but only running with 14 MB total avail mem. And I know that NOT right. Unfortunatly when I went to Nvidia's site and ran the auto detect it said that I didnt even have their product and that I had the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.

I can't seem to find the right drivers for this to fix it all, and I would love to be able to "Experience" Windows 7 at its fullest. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully the attached photos will give you an idea as to what Im working with.

Also When i toubleshoot Aero Ive received this message:
"The current video card may support Aero with a driver that is compliant with the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM). Contact the manufacturer of your computer or video card for a WDDM-compatible driver."

And when I try to change my screensaver to a 3D one it states that I either need a newer graphics card or one that is compatible with Direct3D. So yeah. Thats about where Im at.

Hi and welcome to sevenforums. yeah it seems like nvidia has had a tough time with win 7, but it has been getting fixed. What build of win 7 are you running? is it 32bit or 64? and what video card do you have? Ken

Ive been running build 7100 64bit. I havent had any major problems except for being able to render anything 3D. I cant even run the bubbles screensaver lol... And I've been trying to figure out exactly what video card i have. I think its one of the nForce cards. Not 100% though.

According to HP the dv6000 has an nvidea geforce card and the driver can be found here Select software and drivers* I dont think they have a win 7 driver so you might want to look around.

Thanks for the link. I gave it a try and it was for a 32bit system, and it didnt work too well, but thank you for your help.

UPDATE: OK so Ive discovered exactly which GPU I have installed in my PC. It's the Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS. After realizing that I then went to Nvidia.com downloaded the most current driver installer for it (btw it was released like 2 weeks ago) and installed it. And it didn't work... I got an error message saying "Nvidia installer could not locate and drivers compatible with your current hardware." I was rather frustrated. I thought I had found the solution, but so close and no cigar. THEN I went to my device manager and of course it still states that I have the Standard VGA graphics adapter which I found out is the default setting when windows cant locate the driver for something. Anyways I tried uninstalling it and rebooted, but when it powered back on it immediately reinstalled it! So then I went to update the driver for it and choose "let me choose location" and then I was given the choice to choose drivers from a list and I did, and then I found a list of Manufacturers and found Nvidia, then I found my GPU at that point I was extremely hopeful that this was going to work, so then I tried installing the exact driver for my GPU, but to no avail I got and error message saying that it was uncompatible with my hardware.

SO now my question is... How do I get my pc to recognize my hardware without being able to install a driver for it?

Basically Windows 7 won't recognize that I have an Nvidia GeForece 8400 GS, and says that I can only use the Standard VGA. Even when I try to run the latest Nvidia driver installer it wont let me cuz it can't recognize what I actually have.

Is there a way to get the individual driver for my GPU and place it in the driver location without running an installer?

This is the win 7 64 bit driver that was released 3 days ago. I dont know if it is the version you tried. Let me know how it goes

The problem here is that you have an *integrated* 8400 GS - meaning you'll need a driver for that machine. Since HP is slow about putting out the driver, perhaps you'll need to find one elsewhere.

Basically, those integrated GPUs are actually on the motherboard as opposed to separate video cards - thus the 'normal' driver will not work unless you extract the driver files and edit an .ini file to allow it to work on your system.

Your best bet is going to be finding a site that has a lot of laptop users with integrated 8400GS GPUs so you can see exactly *how* to install the latest drivers by knowing *which* file to modify and *where to modify it at.

I have tried that one unfortunately, and thats when I received the error message saying that it "could not locate any drivers that are compatible with my current hardware."

I think I just need to find the exact driver file for the 8400 GS and find a way to force install it or something. I have the vista driver for it and it didnt wouldnt install. When I tried it installing it I got the error message saying "the driver for this selected device does not support this version of windows"

So I most likely just need the Windows 7 individual driver file for the GeForce 8400 GS and install that by itself.

Any ideas as to where I could find an individual file without an installer? Or what I could do to accomplish that?

Do you have any idea as to how to extract those driver files from an installer that I downloaded from Nvidia?

Try using a DVI cable, it worked for me. Else, try modifying the Nvidia drivers with 'powerstrip' to force it to go to the resolution/hz you want. Not recommended, because programs still will think you dont have the correct drivers. So using a DVI cable is your only option atm imho.

I am so frustrated.I have got a similar problem.I have installed win 7 64 bit but windows detects my screen as Generic non Plug and play.I had NO problem in windows XP and could do 1280x1024 no problem.Now I can only do 1024x768.I have a GF8400GS Card.Very latest drivers installed from NVIDIA 191.07. I have checked the back of my monitor it says model VM7ERDA-s12 and it says RECTRON on the front.It is 17''I have tried to "make" a new driver via powerstrip but it didn't work.Now is there something as a generic plug and play driver that I can download/get from somewhere or can I try to install a standard vga monitor driver from the list of monitors that Win 7 supports? I have hooked up my girlfriends screen (17'' Mecer) to my pc and it works fine.So it's not a display driver problem.I cannot seem to find drivers for the VM7ERDA -s12.What am I to do next? Any help will be appreciated.

I had a VERY similar issue. After I had downloaded the lastest driver I had my driver installer search my C: drive for the dirvers and it found and installed them. Once that had finished everything worked properly from the Aero effects, screen diming, and all that good stuff. To do that got to device manager>Display Adapter>Non-PnP Dispaly adapter properties>Driver tab>Update diver>browse my computer....> and just search the C: drive and it should find and automatically install the latest drivers. Hope that works!

You pretty much answered your own question. You hooked up your girlfriends monitor and no problem. Sadly enough unless you can find some kind of driver for your monitir it is not going to work. As you stated you have already tried powerstrip with no success. Unless somebody else on this site knows of a way to, or a program to write a driver .inf file for your monitor. Replacing it seems to be your only way to rectify this problem

I too had the same problem. Extremely frustrating. After reading threads, I finally was able to get nvidia to install updated drivers for windows 7 64 bit.

I went to Disclaimer | laptopvideo2go.com

Downloaded both the driver and .inf

Ran the program, and put the .inf file into the extracted file. After that, it installed and worked.
