Thank you for posting your situation! Now maybe I can try to get to the bottom of why my display does the same thing, see attachment:
Black screen-desttop-blackout.jpg

It has not been that much of a bother so far.
I have had the machine for over a year now, and all I do is return to the desktop and right click and refresh the desktop.

It went away for awhile, but has come back in the last week. It happens when I go to open a shortcut I have placed on the desktop, almost always the one we use for playing an older version (2003) Solitaire game.
I will have to keep better track of when it happens now.

Why does it happen? I honestly do not know.
My best diagnosis for now is, that when (especially) that program is opened it causes a momentary lapse in the refresh rate, and in order to catch up, the display produces the effect we see.

If this was on a television set you would have to double check the 'close captioning' setting to make sure it was turned off properly, but this is a different situation with a PC and its Display.

Rose, can you post a screenshot or snip? And, we will need better System Specs from your machine to properly evaluate the problem.

Are you trying to say that the blankness goes away on its own?

All I can say is run all video settings at their default levels.

Check to see if you have the latest drivers for your machine.
Does Device Manager have any warnings?

Make sure you force Windows to check for any Updates.

Flash, and shockwave up to date?

Java?

Last time you ran any malware scans?
