Only mirrored displays work

In the past I frequently connected my HP Pavilion dv6000 (loaded with Windows Vista) to my entertainment center using S-Video. Since dual booting Windows 7 I have tried connecting my laptop to my entertainment center and I'm able display a mirror of my desktop, but if I try to display only to the secondary display (being my TV) both the TV and the laptop screen go black. When the screen goes black I am completely unable to recover the computer; I pull the S-Video connection, open and close the lid, hit the WinKey + P, fn + F4 but nothing I do brings back the display so I have to do a hard restart each time it happens. I am hoping someone can tell me how I can get control over my display settings, or at least why it is dying when I set it to external display only. Thanks.
