Blank Screen, Slow Motion and Colour Bleed. GPU Failure?

Hi there,

Sorry about the title I wasn't sure how to put it.

My newly built computer seems to have an issue with either the graphics card or the monitor or both and i am not sure which. The three problems I have are the windows aero animations have gone into slow motion as if the GPU can't handle them (it is the same for games) Also the monitor sometimes randomly goes blank while I am using the computer (most often when something graphically intense comes on screen) When I say 'go blank' I mean the desktop dissapears off the monitor but the monitors back-light is still on, I think is the computer crashing but can't tell because the monitor isn't showing anything. Finally the colors sometimes bleed in certain areas. Here is a demonstration of the bleeding. http://i41.tinypic.com/jkc183.png

What confuses me is that my monitor has different issues when plugged into my mums mac but still doesn't work properly. Also my mums monitor works fine in her mac but I still have all the same problems above when it is plugged into my pc.

Here is my PC spec:

Intel Core i5 2500 @ 3.30GHz
ATI Radeon HD 6870
MSI Motherboard H61
8GB RAM (all being detected correctly)
Corsair CX500 PSU
Seagate Barracuda 1TB
LiteOn IHAS124 24x

Here are the drivers I have:

My monitor (Novatech 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor Full HD) - I can't find any drivers
Mums monitor (Dell SE198WFP) - Driver version 1.0.0.0
ATI Radeon HD 6870 - Driver version 11.12

First thing to check is to make sure that the GPU is properly seated all the way as well as the rest of the hardware. Next would be to make sure that you have both 6 pin power connections connected and seated all the way. Thirdly, making sure that you have the latest driver installed and finally checking to make sure you that have the native resolution set correctly.

Thanks for your advice. I tried all the things you suggested and everything was fine and I have the latest driver but the problem is still here :/ do you have any other suggestions?

Yep...have a few more for yah. Check the refresh rate of the monitor, it should be set at 60 Hz, change it to 75 Hz and see what happens. Next thing is; what kind of cable are you using to make the connection between pc and monitor? I would recommend a dual link DVI cable, but a single link should work. If using a VGA cable, that may very well be your problem as there are resolution limitations to the output of the VGA cable. Then there is the GPU, it could be over heating and/or be defective. An over heated GPU will play havoc with your system...are you having any BSOD's.

I'm not sure if I mention in the first post but this links to something you said, the monitor only plays up when it is set at 1920x1080 and it is a VGA cable. My mum has now bought the monitor off me because she wants a new one so I will be getting a new monitor which connects via HDMI, do you think this could help? My mum has arranged for the other monitor to be taken back and checked for faults so I currently can't use my pc until my new monitor arrives. I did try changing the referesh rate to 59Hz because that's what the reviews said the monitor works best at but windows wouldn't let me change it to anything so it was stuck at 60Hz. Finally, I checked the GPU while it was on and the fan is defiantly going and it doesn't feel too hot inside the case. Also I am not getting any BSOD's.

That's one way to go about it....just remember with the new monitor your getting, that it has DVI and HDMI connections. VGA has limitations on resolution. Stick with DVI or HDMI. Tip: The only difference between DVI and HDMI is sound. The HDMI cable carries sound and the DVI doesn't, both are HD cables.

I had the same problem a couple of years ago,games were in slow motion.
Now with your graphics card Aero isnt supposed to malfunction at all.
First,Try updating the drivers (do not if you already have)
Then try and check if the graphics card is properly seated
Then check if the monitor is in mint condition
