Odd video glitch.

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to look.

I dont have any screencaps because I'm at the office at the moment, but when I get home I'll post some. The video will suddenly get a bunch of horizontal one inch lines with the colors presently on the monitor all jumbled up. The OS itself isn't locking up, everything is working fine behind the graphics glitch, except for the display itself.

I've updated the NVidia drivers, first with the Win 7 RC drivers on Nvidia's site, then rolling back to Vista drivers.

I didn't think that would fix the problem and it didn't. The odd part is, I've noticed after checking different things that it does it when the CPU fan speeds up, and goes away about 3 seconds before the fan slows down.

I typed out the system I'm running when I registered this account, not sure if that is viewable by other users, if it isn't I'll post my system specs and get some pics up later.

Loosely translated: When my CPU gets too hot, the video faults.

I could be wrong. Give your case and radiators a good cleaning.

But that's the odd thing, I can boot over to XP and it won't happen.
Increase in fan speed = rising cpu temp = under load, but the fact it's occurring in 7 and not XP has me stumped.

EDIT: Took the can o' air to it and no change.

OK, just to clarify - in XP, does the CPU fan speed up and not cause the issue? May be a moot point anyway.

The driver thing - you updated and rolled back as a response to the issue, or the issue occurred after the driver dance?

Yep, in XP I can hear the fan speed up and nothing happens on the screen, in 7 speeds up and video glitches.

The problem began occuring right after win 7 install, before any drivers were changed, continued after Nvidia drivers were changed to 7, and still persisted after changing them to Vista.

It's safe to rule out software at this point I'd think, but the whole "not happening in XP" has me stumped.

Ok Aero uses a constant video overlay that didn't exist in XP...
Perhaps this caused the card to work harder, and caused a capacitor to overheat or distend, which means the card is working at a minimal capacity now...

Pulling the card to check for funny looking capacitors. Will update.

Hi Martin,

I've seen a couple of similar cases pop up.

There seems to be a pattern there.

All cases I've seen have no trouble with XP, no trouble with Win7 32bit, but all have trouble with Win7 64bit.

And all of the cases have AMD 64 X2.

If I would have to make an educated guess I would say the cool & quiet drivers and or chipset drivers for X64 are the culprit.

I am suspecting they have wrong dividers in them what makes the fans come on too late, or turn to slow.

You could try getting AMD's latest chipset for your machine, and the latest Cool & Quiet driver for your rig.


If that doesn't help, you could try (for experiment sake) install Win7 32bit and see if the problem goes away.


If so, I think we have found a real bug of importance that MS needs to address asap.

Ok, popped out the vid card (and looking over my previous posts I realize I said CPU, I meant GPU, it's the GPU fan that is speeding up, not the CPU fan. Sorry! ), I see absolutely nothing that would indicate a fried card.

Popped it back in, booted into XP, loaded Vistamizer to get XP as close to Vista as I could, started up Winamp, and started Milkdrop 2.0 visualization, and loaded Turok...all are running with the GPU spinning it's heart out, no video glitches.

All I can figure is it HAS to be something along those lines Squonksc.
The only problem is, I AM running 32-bit! What is going on here?!

Hmm, don't know where I got the notion you were on 64bit. Must have confused it with other poster.

Try the Cool & Quiet drivers from AMD website, and try finding latest chipset drivers.

It must be bug in Win7 both 32bit and 64bit in combination with internal GPU's.
