Connect TV to PC with a direct connect Cat5 Cable

I have a large screen TV that I need to run PowerPoint presentations on, and maybe video. The IT department set up Cat5 from the PC to the TV, but I cannot get anything from the PC to display.

I am trying this on two different computers. One is XP Pro, and the other is Windows 7 Pro. I would prefer the XP machine, but will sacrifice the Windows 7 machine to this if I have to.

Both the PC and the TV show connectivity at the ports, but there is no display on the TV. Multiple Monitors do NOT show in either machine.

Is this possible without additional hardware?

Win key + P enables projection mode and displays it.

You sure it is Cat5, and not hdmi?

If you're trying to use ethernet to get multi-media to the television then you must bear in mind it has no onboard software to run any Windows or Office programs, but to get a TV connected over ethernet you must either...

1) Link the TV to the router so that it gets a network IP address

2) Bridge your WiFi adapter on your machine to it's ethernet port (or bridge two hardwired ethernet adapters together) and enable internet connection sharing.

If you're trying to use an HDMI cable then you don't need worry about IP addresses or anything, just select the primary HDMI input and it should be able to act as an additional computer display.

if your tv has DLNA than you can use a switch to connect and play media on your Tv, probably your Tv doesnt support DCC so you will need a router or a switch to get media directly run on your tv.
I know it has passed 2 years on the subject but just for someone else.
