Graphics card turns off

Hello. My graphics is a GTX 460. I built a new computer on the 10th of january and up until tuesday the 17th everything has been running perfectly. But on tuesday my graphics card driver would continuously crash and then recover.

Now my graphics card has started to turn off completely, and the computer would reboot. This mostly happens while playing a game. But it also happens while browing the internet too.

I've my graphics card in my old computer right now, and everything seems to be running fine.

So what else could it be.

Faulty motherboard?
PSU problem?

ouch, did you install the right drivers for the graphics card?

You could have a problem with your motherboard or power supply, but I'd be inclined to try a different driver first.

Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Not sure where you live so just double-check for the correct region when you use the site.

When you install it, go for the custom install, which will automatically delete the old driver first, and then clean install trhe new one.

I use the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 on my rig and so far it has performed flawlessy, although I have to I don't play games, but do use Photoshop.

I have tried the lasted driver which worked fine until tuesday. Yesterday I installed an older driver, 275.33. But this morning it crashed again.

The video card has been running fine on my other computer, so right now i've put it back in my new computer and reinstalled windows. Im just installing all the drivers at the moment.

My PSU is only a 550w. Do you think that is enough?

Edit. I just installed the nvidia driver, restarted my computer and then logged in and then right away i see "display driver nvidia has crashed and recovered"

Your power supply should be fine.

My graphics card runs off a 425w PSU without any trouble.

You could wait for Windows Updates to offer you a graphics driver update or you try another graphics card if you have one.

Failing that, you may have a problem with your motherboard.

I have a old 8800 gt, could try that i suppose.


Edit - I just installed some windows updates now when I restart my computer and log in, I get a black screen and then computer reboots. Motherboard issue?

Well its not the motherboard. No crashes at all with the 8800 gt installed.

If you are overclocking go back to stock settings. My ASUS motherboard has an overclocking option that by default is set to auto. If your motherboard has a similar option you may want to disable it as a test. How are your case temps? Does your case have good airflow?
