Proper sequence for replacing a video card

Is there a preferred sequence that one should use (and one should avoid) in replacing a video card... to avoid being left in the dark?

On my Dell Dimension 9200 (now on Win 7 Home Edition, 64 bit), I will be replacing its x16 256mb OEM NVidia GeForce 8600GT with a freed up card from another machine (x16 OEM 1GB ATI RADEON HD 5670).

    Will this sequence work?:
    • remove all Nvidia software via control panel
    • power down and remove the card
    • insert the replacment ATI card and power up
    • pray it will work with native windows drivers
    • install ATI The AMD Catalyst™ Control center
    • run "auto-detect" the card
    • follow prompts to install the proper drivers.
or is there a safer sequence of steps?

Looks about right. If you haven't yet may want to download the latest AMD driver,

Latest AMD Catalyst Video Driver for Windows 7

so you have it ready to go. Steps 5 and 6 shouldn't be needed.

Back in the day prior to Win 7 even Vista I used to use Driver Sweeper to remove leftover driver data that sometimes would impinge on new driver installation. Anyone think its needed anymore? It is located Here: Guru3D - Driver Sweeper .

I never had any issues as of late also uninstalling old drivers via the control panel but thought it might be something worth mentioning......:)

    Thanks for the post.

All done and no issues I am aware of.

Hardest part was actually just physically seating the card - Dell has too many obstructions making it way more frustrating than it needs to be.
