How do I turn off hardware acceleration?

I have gone into Appearance and Personalisation, then clicked Adjust Screen Resolution, then Advanced Settings, I click Troubleshoot but the Change Settings button is greyed out as I can't click it, with a little administrator shield next to it. I am the only user and the admin on this computer. Please help?

Welcome to Seven Forums mongoose665. You are not alone. It is only available when the GPU and/or driver support it. Mine is greyed out as your is. I found this:

NVIDIA: Disable Hardware Acceleration in Windows 7

You can disable it within IE9 if you are using it.

What video card brand and model are you using? What is the issue that makes you want to disable hardware acceleration? It's likely you will have to find another solution then what you are attempting. A Guy

My Video Card is a AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Processor I think. I have gone into the AMD control panel but it says it has the latest updates. I am turning it off as I have a game and the sound keeps freezing and I had read up on forums that to stop this happening you have to change the hardware acceleration to none.

That is your CPU. Grab this,

GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility

and it should show what video card you have.

P.S. What game? Also you video card and sound drivers installed and up to date?

The GPU-Z says my video card is an AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series. The game is actually Silent Hill II for the PC, I don't know how to check if they are updated but I go into the AMD control centre and there are no new updates.

You might try Game Booster if stormy13 doesn't have a fix for you. I don't game, but apparently Game Booster works as advertised, and doesn't cause any problems. A Guy

You can turn off hardware acceleration completely or turn it down system wide in the following manner:
Click on Start > Control Panel.
In the classic view, double click on the Display icon.
Select the Settings tab and click on the Advanced button. The Advanced Settings dialog box appears.

    Click on the Troubleshoot tab.

You can disable the hardware acceleration completely by dragging the slider to the extreme left of the scale. You can also choose to turn down the hardware acceleration by selecting an intermediate value.

If the issue is resolved with hardware acceleration turned off, the source of the problem could be old video drivers for your video adapter. In that case, you need to contact the manufacturer of your video card to get the latest drivers.

If you have installed the latest video driver for your video adapter and you continue to experience graphic issues with the Graphics Hardware Acceleration slider set to ‘Full’

Considering how old that game is, have you tried running it in Compatibility Mode ?

When I open Google I get Muli Screens instead of one screen.
I have at sometime fixed this issue but now I don't remember how.

Right click the games shortcut, wherever it may be, where you launch the game, select properties. Select the compatibility tab, set it to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2/3 'and' check the box for 'Disable Desktop Composition'.

The second part will accomplish the same thing as what you're attempting to do, but only temporarily and only when necessary.

If it's a Steam game and you don't use a shortcut outside of the Steam library, you'll need to go directly to the directory where it's installed and follow these same steps on the games executable.
