    Hi hifismith,

The HDMI socket is electronically terminated. (hope you know what i mean)

When pc boots, electronics will check if there is a cable connected.

If there is, the electronics will not apply the termination.

If there is not, it will.

When you boot without a cable attached, the connection is terminated.

By pushing in the cable, you make a power short circuit.

Thanks for the information. Anything I can learn about the system the more sane I become. I can't figure anything out logically at this point.

Is there anything I can do about the termination issue or is it a problem with the design of the port/card, and why does it only happen with this wall plate over cat5 configuration?

Have you tried connecting the HDMI end first to the computer, and then the Cat5 end to the plate?
I have, and the computer shut down.

I guess in the case of the two machines, both sides check before putting power on the connection. Kind of handshake.
In the case of the plate, the power is already on it on that side.

Not absolutely sure about that, but logically seems to be the case.

    Good luck

It would seem logical, that if you are able to remove and reconnect the HDMI cable with out shutting the computer down, then you should be able to remove the HDMI cable from the computer, connect the cat5, and reconnect the HDMI cable with out shutting down the computer?

I did a lot more testing. Here's what happened:

I simplified. HDMI --> Wall plate ---> cable 2 ---> wall plate and my computer shuts down.

BTW: HDMI --> wall plate --> cable 1 --> wall plate does not cause a short.

Notice that the circuit did not have to be completed with the receiver or the TV, or even with both cat5e cables. Whatever is happening in the wall plat is causing the mess. It also doesn't matter which order I do this (the wall plates are labeled either "input" or "output").

I tested this on my xbox 360 and it worked fine when I connected/disconnected while powered on. It was direction dependent (i.e. plugging 360 into "output" wall plate did not work).

    short

i think i know what the problem is its ot a problem with the wire its a problem with the hardware its self the problem that you are facing is a difficult one at best, to put t simply you have a couple of pieces of metal touching one being connected the the motherboard which is most likly going to be the earth and the other is a live which will be connected to the socket of the HDMI, grab a tourch and have a look into you hdmi port see if you can see the live pin usually second to the left side of the port when you plug your hdmi into the connector it is shorting accross the leads metal outer and hitting the earth which in turn sends an electrical signal to the off button on your motherboard see if you can prize the live down slightly this should fix your problem, be care full and do not do this while to computer is on and take out the battery, remeber that you should always use a red handeled screw driver when fixing electicals as theese are deigned to keep you safe and to stop you from being electricuted if in dout contact your local comuter shop for further assistance or message me.
