How to identify graphics card series and manufacturer without driver

I have brought graphics card from friends old computer[DESKTOP].he lost the driver cd and can not remember its series or manufacturer.there is a sticker on it which says--gf 9400gt 512 mb.i installed the card win 7 booted up.it detects the card as standard vga graphics adapter, device manager says device is working properly gives me 1024x780 resulotion.so i tried 9 series gf driver from nvidia.it says no cmpatible hardware detected.nvidia auto scan same result.how can i know which card actually i am using? If it is gf 9400gt 512 mb then what is the problem with driver.in device manager hardware id is like this----

    pci\ven_10de&dev_01dc&rev_a1

I'm not sure how ZigZag came to that conclusion but you could also try GPU-Z. I don't know if it works without the correct driver though.

All you have to do is to google the hardware ID's. There is also PCI Vendor and Device Lists

I Googled "PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_01DC&CC_0300" and all I came up with was "NVIDIA Quadro FX 350M" and I just checked that site you linked too and done a device search for "01DC" and it returned "NVIDIA Quadro FX 350M" and under vendor details,

    Chip Number: G72
Chip Description: NVIDIA Quadro FX 350M
    Notes: Dell Mobile Precision M65

I also checked a few drivers from NVIDIA's site earlier and could not find a matching ID in any of them, but I could not get a driver for the "Quadro FX 350M" other than a linux driver which I could not check.

That is likely due to its age and that at the time the only place you could get the driver for it was from the laptop manufacturer due to licensing restrictions between them and Nvidia (exact thing applied to ATI as well). The only other option was to get them from a place like this,

Drivers | drivers for mobile cards and laptops | laptopvideo2go.com

which has modified the INF from the reference Nvidia driver so that it will install on just about any Nvidia laptop graphics. Also looks like they stopped adding support for that card back in the 259.47 driver, possibly due to anything newer not working with the Quadro 350M.

    Thanks for the info Stormy.
Hopefully the OP can find a working driver to give higher resolutions whether it's a Quadro FX 350M or a GeForce Go 7800.
