What is the highest resolution of my graphics card?

A friend wants to buy a monitor with higher resolution, but needs to know what resolution is supported by the graphics card.

I know in winXP, I can turn off "Hide modes this monitor doesn't support" in display properties and see all the supported resolutions in the "list all modes" button.

Does this work in windows 7? I ask because using remote debugging on my friends' computer, even after turning off "hide modes this monitor doesn't support", no higher resolutions shows up (max out 1280 x 1024, which is the current resolution). I find it hard to believe that is the max. Even a ten year old graphics card would support at least 1600 x 1200, and this is a 2 years old acer pc with intel i3 cpu. There is only one video output: a vga port.

The "graphics card" is a built-in chip "intel hd gr 2000" according to device manager. It uses share memory, with 64 M of dedicated memory.

Is there a utility that can query the video card and display all resolutions?

Have you checked your settings in your Control Panel?

    Is this what you're after?

It looks like the highest resolution listed in "all modes" also happens to be your current resolution, which is the native resolution of your monitor.

Has anyone been able to see a resolution in this list that is higher than the native resolution of the monitor?

My theory is that windows 7 prevents unsupported higher resolutions from showing up in this list so that users cannot screw themselves up. Please tell me I'm wrong.

We have no idea what monitor you have or graphics card.

The ATI or Nvidia graphics card driver/software may be limiting the resolution to match the monitor.
ATI Catalyst or Nvidia Control panel.
Right click an open area of the desktop and one of these is usually listed. Then left click if one of these are listed.
    Settings will be there.

Maximum resolution of the video card would be listed at the web site of the manufacturer of the video card. Asus, MSI, Gigabyte etc.
