No, sli isn't needed in this situation. Sli is used to run multiple cards to run a single monitor for better gaming performance. Sli and nvidia surround is used to create a spanned single desktop out of multiple monitors for gaming, usually 3 screens otherwise the middle of your game would be at the bezel of the 2 monitors.
One gtx460 can run run 2 monitors by itself.
Cratius needs to tell us what monitors he has so we can determine what connections are available.
He also needs to tell us exactly why he wants those 2 cards in the machine.
